OPP AND MTO TEAMING UP ON HIGHWAY 93 TO REDUCE WINTER DRIVING COLLISIONS
(County of Simcoe, On)- Members of the Southern Georgian Bay Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) along with the Ministry of Transportation (MTO) are teaming up their patrols and presence on Highway 93 south of Midland that has seen a spike in collisions since November 2014.
Officers will be out on patrol paying special attention to drivers who violate the rules of the road in the areas of speeding and aggressive driving, distracted driving, failure to wear seat belts and driving under the influence of alcohol and or drugs.
Winter roads maintenance crews operating under contract with the Ministry of Transportation (MTO) to clear snow and ice from Highway 93 will be keeping a close eye on the highway surface especially during commuting hours.
“It is a primary goal of the OPP to provide safe roadways for commuters, commerce and tourists to get to their intended destinations safely. Our officers will be out on designated highway patrol using the latest in technology speed and alcohol measuring devices in fully marked and unmarked cruisers. We intend on further reducing collisions by teaming up with the MTO contractors who are using the latest in snow and ice removal systems and I will be monitoring our success in collision reduction” states Detachment Operations Manager Staff Sergeant Michael Burton.
Drivers are urged to be part of the collision reduction strategy by clearing all of your vehicles windows and lights of snow and ice. Turn on your full vehicle lighting system and DRIVE TO THE ROAD CONDITIONS.
