Snowmobilers Advised to Stay Off the Ice after Weekend Incidents

(TINY TOWNSHIP, ON) - Members of the Southern Georgian Bay Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) were dispatched at 3:06pm Sunday December 17, 2017 to a single snowmobile through the ice on Fairlain Lake in Tiny Township.

Two snowmobiles where east bound on concession 17 East of Tiny Township when they came to the west shoreline of Fairlain Lake. One of the snowmobiles with a lone occupant ventured out onto the ice surface and did a loop of the lake and upon returning to his starting point went through the ice into the icy waters in excess of 2 M in depth approximately 30 M from shore. After the efforts of the two snowmobilers on shore where unsuccessful to rescue the lone snowmobiler, Police were contacted and arrived near 3:20pm.

Attending Officers along with a member of the County of Simcoe Paramedic Service attended the scene and crept along the ice surface and were able to successfully toss an emergency rope to the snowmobiler and removed him from the water. The 60 year old resident male snowmobiler of Tiny Township was quickly transported by the County of Simcoe Paramedic Services to Georgian Bay General Hospital Midland for medical treatment of the effects of hypothermia and later released.

Later in the day at 4:00pm Police received a report of another snowmobile going through the ice at the south end of Penetanguishene Bay in the Town of Penetanguishene. The driver was able to get off the machine and get to shore without incident.

Snowmobile operators are reminded, No Ice is Safe Ice.
