Dave Thomson

If you’re going to create something that is from the heart, expect to do it forever, and appreciate those who feel it with you; appreciate those who don’t. Because we all feel love and hurt in time.

From the moment he realized he was a songwriter, Dave Thomson found his own unique way of performing his songs, and unapologetically making records that best fit where his message was coming from.

Such is the case of his first solo release entitled, ‘Moths’. Recorded on 2 inch tape with producer Eric Vani, a.k.a. Rise Ashen, from Ottawa and under Vani’s label Prose-Act records, the songs on the album are mixed with melancholy and a hopeless romanticism that give the guitars and strings ample room to breathe, and the songs a lot time to sit heavy on your heart. With most of the recording being done between 2am and 5am, Thomson deemed the album “midnight music”, and suggests that those are the hours you should listen to it.

‘Veins’, Thomson’s second full release, is an eclectic collage of 17 songs written over 4 years. Recorded and produced with Jamie Williams at Maple Leaf studios north of Barrie, ‘Veins’ features strong poetic acoustic songs like the “Ligthfoot-esque” ‘the couple in the next room’, to heavier rock based songs like ‘song to a dead man’, mixed with a little bluegrass tune called ‘this old heart’.

Sharing stages with musicians and artists from all over the world, each individual song of Thomson’s seems to draw comparisons to various artist that have affected him throughout his life. Artists like Neil Young, Elliott Smith, John Lennon, Thom Yorke and Frank Black, are all prevalent influences in his new material soon to be released.

Watching Dave Thomson perform, you are taken on a ride through his heart. His voice, which can go from sweetly smooth tone to a raspy wail, will sing lyrics that are too honest and emotive to not relate with. Mixed with his want to play whatever he finds on stage, you are destined to be entertained.
