Spring Has Officially Arrived!

This is a HUGE newsletter, so grab a coffee (or a glass of wine, depending on the time of day and your preferences) and get cozy. Please let me know if you have any questions. Lots of pork in the freezer still - make sure you check out the Easter Ham recipe - amazing!

We are gearing up for ‘true’ spring by starting seedlings, marking the expected due date for our next litter of bacon bits on the calendar and happily watching the snow melt.

Books 2 Eat - Midland

We will be participating for the 2nd year in a row in a wonderful fundraiser for the Midland Public Library - Books 2 Eat. Competitors put their creative caps on and transform a book into an edible creation. Guests enjoy wine and appetizers while judging who has made their book come to (edible) life in the best possible way. Once a winner is announced, guests then get to feast on the ‘books’. It’s such a fun event with local chefs and businesses all getting in on the act.

Last year Nathan and I turned The Hobbit into a delicious landscape of caraway seed cakes, pork pies with lard crust and apple raspberry jam mini pies. It was delicious (but we didn’t win)

As of right now (Friday pm) there *may* still be tickets available. Stop in at the Midland Public Library or Grounded Coffee to pick yours up today! The tickets in previous years have sold out, so go buy yours now to avoid disappointment!

The event runs this Sunday, March 29 starting at 2pm. Tickets are $20.00


Orillia Food Council

Nathan will be attending and speaking at the Orillia Food Council’s meeting this Saturday at the Orillia Public Library. If you live in the area and think farmers, food and how it all works together is important, you may want to make plans to attend. The meeting runs on Saturday, March 28 from 230-430.

CSA [Save The Date]

Our ever popular Community Supported Agriculture Program is receiving it’s final (organizational) touches and will be open for registration soon.

An overview for those who may have not heard of a CSA before:
At 10foldfarms we offer a seasonal basket of delicious farm fresh veggies each week running from approximately the May long weekend until Thanksgiving weekend.

Each week you will receive 6-10 items depending on the time of year and the success of the crops.

Here is a list of most of the items we grow on the farm:

Spring

ASPARAGUS  - The 3 year wait will make this crop extra delicious!
Salad Blend - handpicked baby salad leaves, chard, kale, spinach, beets, arugula, mizuna, and many more changing each week
Braising Blend - handpicked salad great for eating fresh or light cooking to add depth radish, mustard, kale, collards, etc
Green Onions - use in cooking or fresh
Spinach - mixed baby and large leaf spinaches for fresh or cooking
Peas - snow, sugar snap, podded
Beets - round, cylinder, golden, red, candystriped
Kale & Collard Greens  - high in phytonutrients, great tasting
Mustard Greens - a hot and spicy blend of purple and green salad leaves. Gives a spicy zip to your salad or can be used in cooking
