Clean or Replace Filters
Just like your furnace filters, it is a good habit to get into to clean or replace the filters in your air conditioner every three months. This is because a clogged filter means your air conditioner will potentially be working in overdrive, making it less efficient.
Clear the Area Around the Unit
With the condenser unit of the air conditioner being located outside of the home, it is prone to accumulate debris around it. Things like leaves, dirt and even grass clippings can build-up on the unit which can greatly reduce your air conditioner’s capacity by reducing its airflow. This is why it is a good idea to keep an eye on the unit and make sure you keep the area around the unit clean.
Clean the Condenser Coils
With your air conditioner unit sitting outside, and most sitting on the ground, the condenser coils can become dirty. Over time the coils will still collect dirt and debris. This can reduce the airflow into the unit and also insulate the condenser coils which reduces the air conditioner’s ability to reject heat. To avoid this problem, check your condenser coils every year and clean it as necessary.
Fix the Fins
The aluminum fins on condenser coils can be easily bent which can then block the airflow through the coil. You can use a special tool called a fin comb that will comb the fins back into nearly original condition. If you do not have a fin comb, you use a dinner knife and apply gentle pressure to bend them back in place. Be careful not to insert the knife too deep or you could damage the unit.
Unclog the Drain Tube
If you see water pooling around the unit, you might have a clogged drain tube. Condensation from air conditioning coils contains bacteria that can clog the drain tube. It is a good idea to occasionally pass a wire through the unit's drain tube to prevent this from happening.
Preparing for Winter
After the summer season, it is always a good idea to prepare the unit for the winter months. Covering your air conditioner will protect the unit from winter weather and debris and keep it ready to go next summer.
