Summer Plumbing Issues
Outdoor Taps Leaking
Outdoor taps often go unchecked and an undetected leak can put a real strain on your water system and, even worse, do damage your home’s foundation. This is why it is a good idea to test all your taps once you turn the water back on to your outside faucets. If you do find one that is leaking, sometimes it can be as simple to repair as replacing the washer.
Sump Pumps
If you have a basement or crawl space that is prone to flooding, you probably have a sump pump installed to handle the excess water. While you may not think to keep an eye on it during the summer, sometimes unexpected downpours can quickly turn into a flooding situation. It is always a good idea to double-check that your sump pump is in good working order each season to help avoid flooding in your basement.
Sweating Toilets
During the summer, warm and humid weather can cause toilet tanks to sweat. When the tank fills with cold water, the outside of the tank drops in temperature. When the warm summer air hits it, condensation forms on the tank. While it might not seem like a big deal, a constant flow of water can cause damage to the floor or even damage the bolts holding the toilet in place.
One affordable way to fix this problem is to add a layer of insulation inside the tank which will then help prevent the outside tank from getting cold. Another thing to consider is if your flapper is leaking, this would cause cold water to be added to the tank constantly. While a leaking flapper wastes water, it also makes the tank colder. One way to check if your flapper is leaking is to put a few drops of food colouring in the tank. If after some time you see the colouring in the bowl of the toilet, your flapper will need to be replaced.
Clogged Disposals
Summer time is barbecue season! This can lead to an influx of things getting put down your garbage disposal. For example, certain fruits and vegetables are far too tough or fibrous to be ground up properly. This can lead to blade damage and, even worse, cause clogs. A good way to help prevent blockages in your disposal is to let the cold tap run for about ten seconds before and after you use the disposal. Also, avoid putting any used cooking oils or grease down your disposal, as it can congeal when exposed to cold water and form stubborn clogs.
