WHAT'S ON AT THE MCC SEPTEMBER

Carla here from the MCC!  It’s hard to believe September is already here.  On the plus side, we have three of our popular MCC series returning for their 2018/2019 season: A Day In The Life with host Fred Hacker, Our Health moderated by Keith Rose, and our children’s series Family Scene at the MCC.  We also have a brand new series launching this month called The Legends of Folk.  Be sure to check out some of our fabulous programming.  There’s always something for everyone at the Midland Cultural Centre.

We kick off September with
Canadian blues singer and guitarist SUE FOLEY on the 1st.  Sue Foley is a multi-award-winning musician and of the one of the finest blues and roots artists working today. She is a veritable triple-threat of musical talent as a guitarist, songwriter and vocalist. As with many blues women of the past, Foley has a long history of defying convention, and being a positive role model for aspiring, young female musicians.

With now 12 recordings under her own name, an instructional DVD and book, as well as various compilations and projects, Foley released her new album, The Ice Queen in March of this year.  The Ice Queen represents Sue Foley’s indefatigable commitment to her craft, and her transparency with the journey that birthed her, further proving that you can’t keep a good blueswoman down, particularly when she is The Ice Queen.

The Legends of Folk Series presents JANIS IAN on September 11th & 12th for for an intimate interview and performance. Janis Ian has been a professional singer-songwriter since the age of twelve. She has released 22 major label albums that have sold over 9 million copies worldwide. She is most recognized for her songs "At Seventeen" and "Society's Child".

Now in her fifth decade of writing songs and performing, Janis Ian received her most recent Grammy nomination in 2016 for the self-produced “Patience & Sarah”, an audio book she produced and co-narrated with the actress Jean Smart (“Designing Women”.) This makes a total of 10 nominations in 8 different categories, a record for a solo artist whose first nomination came at the age of 16 for her debut album, “Janis Ian”.

Her tours have sold out in every country she’s visited, and her songs have been recorded by artists as diverse as John Mellencamp, Amy Grant, Diane Schuur, and Joan Baez. Janis has dueted with Willie Nelson, Dolly Parton, Mel Torme and, most recently, Trevor Sewell; their single, released only in the UK, jumped up the jazz charts.

Fun for the entire family!  Proudly sponsored by the Rotary Club of Midland, FAMILY SCENE AT THE MCC is back on September 15th with THE MAGIC OF SCOTT DIETRICH. Scott's fast paced, fun filled Magic Show is 40 minutes of fun and hilarity! His secret ingredient is the kids, who become active participants in the show. The highlight of the program comes when the children help in the magical production of Scott's live bunny, Sir Walken. Other tricks include cards, ropes, rubber sharks, multiplying Angry Birds, Sponge Bob and so much more. You'll even learn how to perform a couple of tricks. Immediately following his performance all the children will be given the opportunity to pet the bunny. This is often a great opportunity for pictures. There is much fun to be had by all.

Season Subscriptions are still available for our 2018/2019 line up, which includes: THE MAGIC OF SCOTT DIETRICH on September 15th, SHARON & BRAM on November 3rd, DUFFLEBAG THEATRE IN PETER PAN on February 16th and BOBS & LOLO on April 7th.  Season Subscriptions are available through the MCC Box Office.

Proudly sponsored by RBC Wealth Management Dominion Securities – Cathy Bayles, our A DAY IN THE LIFE series returns on September 20th with special guest JESSICA VANDER KOOIJ, Executive Producer for the Property Brothers. On September 21st join Quest Art for their 3rd annual ART SLAM.  This special event, brings together premiere painters of the region to create a night of excitement and entertainment.  All those who attend have the opportunity to watch artists race against time and compete in an epic paint off, and then bid on the incredible paintings created throughout the night. Back dropped with high energy dance music, drinks and other auction items, this is an excellent outing for a large group of friends or to simply grow your personal collection! Sponsored by the Midland Cultural Centre, Scotiabank, Bremel Enterprises & World of Wonders, this yearly event truly is a reflection of the vibrant and generous community residing in and around Midland.

Closing out the month we have NORTH SEA GAS on September 30th.  Over thirty-seven years and stronger than ever! "North Sea Gas" is one of Scotland's most popular folk bands with great vocals and tremendous three part harmonies. Guitars, Mandolin, Fiddle, Bouzouki, Harmonica, Whistles, Bodhrans, Banjo and good humour are all part of the entertainment. They have received Gold and Silver Disc awards from the Scottish Music Industry Association and regularly have sold out shows at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe and around the world!

They have released 19 albums with "When We Go Rolling Home" being the most recent and are constantly adding new material to their shows. One of their previous albums, "The Fire and the Passion of Scotland, was "Album of the Year" at Celtic Radio in the U.S., winning first place in the "Jigs and Reels" category as well for the set of tunes on the album.”
