June 17 – Mike Keenan: Mike was an NHL head coach for 25 years with 8 NHL
teams. He was a General Manager on two occasions. He won the Stanley Cup in 1994
with the New York Rangers. He has recorded the fifth most wins as a coach in NHL
history. For the first 15 seasons that he coached, his team never missed the playoffs.
Mike has worked as an analyst for the New York Rangers on MSG Network and as a
hockey analyst for NBC Sports Network. Mike currently works in Russia, serving as head
coach of the Metallurg Magnitogorsk of the Kontinental Hockey League. In 2014, his
team won the KHL Championship (on the 20th anniversary of his Stanley Cup
victory). Mike is a summer resident of our area.
July 14 – Bill Watters: Bill was a star student athlete in Orillia and at the University of
Toronto. He became at teacher but soon went to work at the Bobby Orr-Mike Walton
Sports Camp which he directed for 9 years. He worked with the infamous Alan Eagleson
for several years. Bill held management positions with Team Canada between 1976 and
1979. In 1980, he severed ties with Eagleson and started his own sports management
firm. He was colour analyst on Leaf hockey games on radio. In 1991 he became
assistant general manager of the Toronto Maple Leafs where he served for 12 years. He
then had a career in sports radio broadcasting. He spends his summers in Orillia.
