A DAY IN THE LIFE WITH MARLENE SMITH
Hello MCC Newsletter Subscribers,
You're invited to join us as Fred Hacker welcomes acclaimed theatrical producer MARLENE SMITH in an intimate conversation on "A Day in the Life - Conversations with Legends and Leaders" tomorrow night.
Marlene has been producing theatre shows for 55 years and estimates that she has been involved in the production of nearly 60 shows in her career. She was the company manager for the 1972 production of Godspell that helped rocket Martin Short, Eugene Levy, Andrea Martin and Gilda Radner to fame. After working for a series of long-running musicals in Toronto, she produced the original, 1985 version of Cats - one of Toronto's very first mega-musicals that helped start Toronto's love affair with mega-musicals. She then ran the Elgin/Winter Garden Theatre, helping to restore it to its former glory. Her production credits include Ain't Misbehavin, Piaf, Damn Yankees, Little Shop of Horrors, The Wizard of Oz and Napoleon.
Last year, she launched Nu Musical Theatricals (NuMu) with her son Geoffrey, David Galpern and Charles Roy. Their aim is to create more opportunities for young, Canadian talent. Marlene is the recipient of the 2010 Silver Ticket Award, presented by the Toronto Alliance of Performing Arts in honour of her lifetime achievement in Canadian theatre. In 2011, she also received the Arts and Letters Club Award.
Marlene is fun, funny and provocative. She'll provide a unique insight into the theatre world. The show is tomorrow night, October 15th at 7:30 pm (doors open at 7pm) in Rotary Hall at the MCC. Tickets are $19 ($10 for students) and are available at the MCC Box Office in person or by calling 705-527-4420, online at
www.midlandculturalcentre.com or at the door.
