Why is My Mouth Always Dry?
A dry mouth can be an annoying, occasional condition brought on by stress or anxiety. Drinking too little water, and breathing through your mouth are two simple causes of dry mouth. Dry mouth can also be a chronic condition caused by medications, medical treatments, and some diseases. Chronic, or persistent, dry mouth should never be ignored because it can lead to mouth infections and periodontal disease.
Saliva, produced by the salivary glands in your mouth, provides important natural protection against tooth decay. A dry mouth can make it hard to chew or swallow food, as saliva is needed to moisten the mouth. If you suffer from chronic dry mouth and do not immediately know the cause, contact your dentist or physician.
Your dentists will ask what medications you are currently taking, or what medical therapies or treatments you are undergoing. Swollen or malfunctioning salivary glands may cause pain when eating, so your salivary glands may also be examined. Your dentist can also prescribe saliva substitutes for chronic dry mouth.
Good oral hygiene, including brushing and flossing, is important if you have persistent dry mouth. Regular dental examinations, cleanings, and fluoride treatments are vital for maintaining healthy teeth and gums, and ensuring that dry mouth is not causing periodontal, or gum, disease.
