Midland Curling Funspiel
For 5 years Bayfield House & Villa Care Retirement Lodges have sponsored the Midland Curling Funspiel. The event is open to the clubs daytime curlers. 75 curlers participated with 20 teams registered. The Funspiel is unique with two normal ends and the other two ends are unusual. Example in the last two ends they may score with all the rocks in a certain area as opposed to the centre of the house. This event was organized by Karen Mallany.

Together we can “fight back” against Cancer.

Bayfield House raises $275 for The Canadian Cancer Society in one hour.

April 1st was no joking around at Bayfield House when the Cancer Society arrived to sell daffodils for their annual fundraiser.

“The table was set up at 1pm and by 2pm they had sold $275 worth of daffodils”, says Amie McGarrity, Wellness Manager who organized the sale with the Cancer Society.  “Residents and staff were in full support of the fundraiser.  Bayfield House does a lot for the Cancer Society.  We are gearing up for Team Bayfield to participate for our second year in the local Relay for Life”.

On January 29, 2011 we were fortunate enough to share a very special occasion with two of our Residents.  Bernadette and Robert Hamelin will be celebrating their 65th Wedding anniversary here at Bayfield House.  By today’s standards this is truly a momentous occasion so I went to ask the happy couple their secret.
Robert and Bernadette met each other when they were 14 years old and it was love at first sight.  The first time they met they were skating and Bob had asked Bernie if she would like to skate with him, she said yes, and so they went skating together after school, the rest is history.

After high school Robert got a job on a boat called St. Hilliard’s that was docked in Midland but went as far north as Parry Sound and to all the Great Lakes.  This ship was also responsible for breaking up the ice on the Welland Canal system.  It would tow a net behind it to gather the ice and then deposit it in Lake Erie.  After this Bob joined the army and was sent overseas.  He landed in Europe on D-Day and was there for three years.

During this time Bernadette worked for the shoe factory making women’s army boots.  When Bob returned from the army his mother sent Bernadette a note to come and welcome him home.  As she was dating another man she did not go but when she finally saw him she broke it off with the other man and not long after she and Robert were married.

When I asked Robert what his first impression of Bernadette was he said that she was pretty and had a great sense of humor and he still feels the same way about her.  Bernadette thought he was handsome.  They made a home together and raised six children.  Bob worked very hard to provide for his family and Bernie was a stay at home mother until the youngest turned three.  She then went back to work at the Penetanguishene hospital.
As a father Bob worked very hard to give all he could to his children.  Bernie says he could never say no to them.  Even through all their ups and downs they still talk to each other, especially at night and that is the secret to such a long and successful marriage.

Alia'n'Tanjay Fashion Show

Residents of Bayfield House strutted their stuff for a crowd of over 60 people Thursday, March 31st.  Alia ‘n Tan Jay Store Manager, Rae Ann along with her District Manager Christine gave the seniors’ community a taste of spring by bringing in their new collection to be showcased.  The models were whisked away in the Bayfield House van for a day at the store to get sized and select their outfits.  Each model received a generous gift certificate which they will use on their next outing of day shopping at the Mountainview Mall Alia ‘n TanJay store.  Thank you to the Bayfield House hair stylist, Tina for doing the model’s hair & make up.
