Roman times weren’t just about Roman Legions, Guardians and Togas, they were also about the Funk of Titans. You play as Perseus, son of the Demi-god Zeus as you run endlessly throughout each level to become a hero.

The gameplay is very simplistic as you run through each level slicing and dicing your way through some enemies while bouncing off others all the while collecting vinyl records. Though easy to pick-up-and-play, the game is too easy. Perseus is set to run on his own for you, having no use of the analog sticks at all and using the A button to jump and X to slice down enemies or other obstacles. Perhaps more use of controls would enhance the overall experience, but using only two buttons for the majority of the game became rather tiresome quickly.

Funk of Titans is rather short as I was able to beat the game in under three hours. However, the developers, A Crowd of Monsters gave the gamers a reason to run their way back through some of the levels as certain areas are locked unless you have a specific weapon. An easy achievement system will help you level up Perseus, unlocking a new helmet and other weapons that are needed to go back and unlock those specific areas.

The cartoonish bobblehead art style with its bright and colourful art palette is very charming. Cell shaded characters dancing about and the Roman feel is very cool. There are 3 worlds to speed run through each with their own unique tone, POP, RAP and ROCK. However, each of the worlds felt very similar to the last with not much change is music direction. ROCK, would have to be my favorite world and is the final world within the game. I would have liked to have seen the ROCK world be our introduction to the game and increasing the difficulty moving forward. Each of the levels were rather simple, but the ROCK world gave the most variation of level design. It added switches and swinging elements that the first two didn’t have and this made the game so much more enjoyable than the first two worlds I encountered.

Boss battles are something games are always challenged with and unfortunately it’s not handled that well here. Funk of Titans is all about timing jumps and sword slashing with the use of two buttons. Boss battles which are met half way through each level and then a final boss at the end are performed in a quick-time-event manner as you battle in a dance off against the final boss of each level.  The boss battles didn’t feel significant enough as you now are using four buttons instead of two while you defeat each boss.

The Funk of Titans is an endless runner that unfortunately falls short with variety and creativity that quickly becomes tiresome with its simplistic controls. With more creative worlds and a higher difficulty that coincides with a much needed control scheme challenge, Funk of Titans next runner could become an endless run away of success.

One moment please...
Taking too long?
