Thrilling, edge of your seat, heart pounding, just a few words that can be used to explain the experience as you play Alien: Isolation.

Sevestapol Station is in a time of economic and social collapse, and you’ve arrived a little late for the party. As Amanda Ripley, the daughter of Ellen Ripley, you enter Sevestapol armed with nothing, no knowledge of what you are facing, no weapons…nothing. And that thought stays with you through the entire game; you are not ready for what lies beyond that door or that corner, and with no clear path and that will frighten the hell out of you. Even as you progress and you obtain your first weapon or your first schematic for a Molotov or a flash bang, they may help but they are never the answer. Not to mention the seemingly impossible distances between each manual save point (yes no auto-saving here) will have you constantly looking through every room and cursing your existence as you realize you have to start back because you didn’t take a minute to save.

The enemies are no different, whether it is the emotionless androids the “Working Joes”, the remaining gangs of stranded humans, or the Alien. They have their own priorities and if you stand in their way or piss them off in any way they will not hesitate to use whatever means to make sure you don’t get in their way again. You will die and if you think you can learn from your mistakes you will die again because the AI will learn from what you do and will never do the same thing twice and shooting your way through will only end in you making too much noise and inevitably getting your face ripped off by none other than the Alien.

But as you progress further and further you will find the there is a way through it, if it’s the floor vents you must use to crouch silently through, the wall vents to scurry from room to room, the lockers to hide from any danger that might walk into the room behind you or the god sent homemade motion tracker, and it really is a godsend. You’ll quickly realize that any noise is not good, if it’s your incredibly loud entrance into a locker or the sound of your heart sinking as the Alien drops into the hallway in front of you and chases you into inevitable death.

The game is visually stunning but it has a few quirks to work out, in a cinematic you will hear the voices of your allies but their mouth and expressions will be a little choppy. The use of music and sound effects is so crucial in the game play and keeping the aspect of the horror in your head as you hear the Alien drop out of a nearby air vent or hearing the beep from your motion tracker telling you something is right beside you. It sticks to the feeling and suspense as the movies do, not action packed but keeping you intrigued and on the edge of your seat by having you question every turn. A lover of the movies and the horror genre will enjoy this game, but it may be too hard or lack guidance for some.
