When Capcom announced they would be launching a new IP titled “Remember Me” and explained the core concept behind the game I was rather intrigued. You play as Niln – a memory hunter with the ability to manipulate others memories. An idea that has not been done before and when brought to my attention I knew I had to play.

The game is set in 2084 in Neo-Paris. On the outside it’s a beautiful looking city with high rise skyscrapers and expensive taste in which humans with higher quality memories live. What lies beneath the city, is a low level grungy uninspired inhabitants of under wealth, these creators are known as “Leapers”.Leapers are outcasts that live in remote and polluted places of Neo-Paris. They are a form of rejected implantation's of the Sensen (a memory). Sensen is a form of the characters memories within the game which can be removed if a hardship does not want to be remembered or replaced with another. The higher the quality of your memory you posses the better lifestyle you can life.

Leapers are the games main source of “Bad guys”. The fighting mechanic is smartly laid out if you pay attention when to implement them within the combo system. You earn Pressen’s (abilities) to expand your fighting, allowing you to string longer combos together only to be cut short by the mob that surrounds you. Fighting when timed properly can be satisfying and engaging, but often falls short to other beaten-up brawlers. I found myself often pulled out of combos when fighting many enemies at once and just downright frustrated. Boss battles are average with others of its nature, find its mechanic of running and dodging and you should be fine.

Puzzles are limited and sparse, often feeling as an afterthought to help break up some of the game play. Platforming is very very hand holding throughout the game as an arrow above each grab handle is indicated. Something that should have been removed after the first level as the game itself it very linear without the options of pursuing your intended goal in multiple paths.

Capcom sold this concept to gamers as they would play the roll of a memory hunter with a great talent for manipulating her targets memory to profit her intended goal. Though I felt this was one of the more interesting and exciting parts of the game, the fact that it only happens 4 times left me confused and disappointed with the rest of the game play. This core concept was the reason why Remember Me had most people interested to play the game in the first place.

In the end I am left wondering what could have been if taken in a different direction. Without the mindless leapers, better game play mechanics and not all of the hand holding along the way and of course, the purpose of the game…hunting down memories and manipulating them to your intended satisfaction.

One moment please...
Taking too long?
