Injustice: Gods Among Us Review

DC Super heroes of our past have had a rough start in the world of video games. With Batman Arkham Asylum and Arkham City, these iconic games started a major shift for fans of the DC comics. So what happens when NetherRealm Studios, the creator behind the infamous Mortal Kombat series were to get a hold of DC’s most beloved super hero’s/villains?

DC fans shouldn’t worry anymore, as DC comics seem to be on the rise thanks to Rocksteady and now NetherRealm Studios who has just brought us – Injustice: Gods Among Us. Things don’t appear to be slowing down for fans with a studio of such high pedigree within the fighting genre NetherRealm Studios brings us a creative twist to the world of DC comics and an interactive fighting game like no other.

With most fighting games, the single player story has never been its main focus. Injustice has a gripping and compelling story that will hook you within the very first few minutes of dialogue. I personally went in expecting a somewhat lame and predictable story to be told. As most are over the top and just downright cheesy. NetherRealm didn’t take their story for Injustice lightly and in fact, aims for a higher more mature level than expected. My jaw dropped right at the beginning of the story and I didn’t stop playing until the “Almost There-Complete 50% of Story Mode” trophy popped.

Story aside, there are lots to do once you have completed the single player story experience. You can focus your training with the many different “Battle” modes. Start with the “Classic” mode and work your way through a ladder system of 10 fighters (the more traditional fight) or try your hand with “Poison” a mode in which your health is constantly decreasing as you fight your way to the top.  S.T.A.R Labs is a spin on mini side missions where you earn stars for each battle you partake in. Stars are required to move onto the next mission with a large amount of missions to accomplish. And of course when you would just like to work on learning your combos, practice mode is there as well.

In a recent interview with senior producer Adam Urbano, we asked him how well is the game balanced for more competitive player’s verses the more casual player? In short his response was “It’s almost a cliché, easy to learn, difficult to master.”

Multiplayer is where you will see and feel Adam’s words come true. Playing the game against the AI, you are able to set the difficulty of the game and feel like a god defeating enemies with ease. But that all changes when you bring you’re highly thought of “A” game to be suddenly decimated be someone else on-line. With Ranked and Player matching set, you will still find those players that know their favorite characters and how to use their character to a higher level then you anticipated.  All I can say is practice, practice, practice! With 1 v 1, King of the Hill, Survivor and daily challenges to test you’re fighting skills there will be lots to keep you coming back for more. An extensive leader board system will track how well you place against the best of the best and amongst your friends.

This is arguably one of the best fighting games I have ever had the pleasure to play. A rich and cinematic single player story to endless battles with friends and others and interactive environments with level transitions never before seen within a fighting game. This is easily a must buy for any fan of the fighting genre.
