Ghost Recon Future Solider (GRFS) has a very extensive single player game where you command a squad of 4 people. You can play a level and take out all the bad guys without ever firing your own weapon, just by targeting the bad guys and commanding the 3 AI in your squad to take them out.

By completing different objectives in the single player you unlock different guns and accessories for your characters in single player and in multiplayer. There is an assortment of different weapons from the vector to the desert eagle, to the MSR sniper rifle and others. Each gun has its own accessorize options like putting a red dot scope or 4X zoom on a shotgun, or incendiary clip for ammo, and maybe add a grenade launch or shotgun attachment under the barrel of the gun. To go with the assortment of guns you also get to choose from incendiary grenades, smoke grenades, EMP, claymores, and one of my favorite for single player the UAV which allows you to mark targets and get a view of the surrounding area.

Visually the game is great to look at with all the fine detail from the characters to the grass you’re laying in for cover. The cut scenes tell a good storyline keeping you hooked wanting to play more.

GRFS has a multiplayer option called guerilla mode which allows you to have up to 4 players online or split screen. Play through 50 levels per map, of wave after wave of AI bad guys that gets progressively harder. A nice little added touch is every 10th level is setup to be a stealth mission where your objective is to reclaim the HQ without getting detected. If you do get detected then you don’t get the stealth bonus and reinforcement will arrive.

At the beginning of every round supplies are dropped off for you to choose from. They usually give you an option of a couple of guns and then the extras like claymores, grenades, and sensors.

The one downfall for guerilla mode for me is the lack of maps. There is only a handful of maps to choose from even with the uplay extra map. I would like to see some more DLC maps for guerilla mode just to change it up a little.

One of the first differences that I have noticed with GRFS multiplayer that makes it different from other shooting games is the fact that its third person view allows you to be able to do more with your character like sliding into cover, or diving down and turning all in one fluid motion. GRFS is not your average shooting game, it’s heavily dependent on the squad working together as a team to get the objective; not like some other shooters where all you’re doing is going around shooting other people. I played one round with some friends and I ended up scoring 5000 points and I didn’t kill anyone.

Multiplayer has 3 characters to choose from: the scout, the engineer, and the rifleman. Each character has different guns like the scout has a lot of sniper rifles, whereas the rifleman has the heavy duty guns that can lay down suppressing fire.

The scout can go nearly invisible when staying still, he also has claymores, and EMP grenades. The Engineer, whom I don’t use very much, has a field computer that allows you to hack guys and capture the objective faster. He also has a jammer that jams the other teams radar so they can’t detect your own team. The Rifleman has regular and incendiary grenades, and can also carry an ammo box for his team to refill their ammo as needed.

You can level up in multiplayer and by leveling up you will unlock different weapons like the vector or the ammo box and so forth. Since the game has launched ubisoft has increased the levels from 50 to 70. That is great for the people who have gotten up that high, but after level 50 you’re just unlocking the next level for bragging rights, they didn’t give anything to unlock after 50. You can unlock and alter weapons so much in the game but where the upgrading drops the ball is customizing your character. You have to do several level ups in order to get anything and then when you do unlock something for your character all you can get is a new face for your guy. You can’t customize your clothes or gloves or boots. It’s a bit of a letdown to see that they have started to allow you to customize your character and just as it starts it ends.

Aside from the minor draw backs that I said; Ghost Recon Future Solider remains one of my favorite single player and multiplayer games for the PS3. If you’re into shooting games and want one that stands out in the crowd, then this is the game to get.
