Creative residents are adding to the ambiance of Villa Care Centre in Midland. They participate in a bi-weekly craft class and, with the help of volunteers, are completing projects that double as decorations for the Jarlette Health Services long-term care home. Recently, for example, residents created 19 Christmas table centerpieces and carried them from the craft room to the main dining room for placement. Co-ordinator of volunteer services and therapeutics Sharon Randall says this new approach to the class gives residents an opportunity to contribute to their home in a meaningful way. They take great pride in this and being able to display their work for other residents, she says.

Recognizing Residents’ Contributions

On October 20, the Villa celebrated Long Term Care Week with a special presentation to residents who go out of their way to make the Villa a better place for everyone to live and work.  12 residents received ‘We Care’ pins from the Villa’s administrator, Edith Robitaille, during our Pub Night celebrations.
Resident contributions range from mail delivery, folding laundry and Resident Council service to assisting other residents with aprons in our dining room, and much more.  Many residents enjoy the opportunity to contribute to their home, and as Resident Council President, Yvonne Wiggins, puts it, “it helps to fill in the time”.  One of the residents honored commented afterwards that he liked to help, but “I didn’t think anybody noticed”.
"Can Do Club" is a program that gives residents the opportunity to help out twice monthly, by preparing newsletter mailings and rolling coin from the vending machines owned and operated by Huronia Seniors Volunteer Care Team.  Finding ways for residents to be involved in their home offers them the opportunity to feel that they’re helping others, and their time and efforts are worthwhile.

2010 Honorees are:
Lorraine ‘Peggy’ Bouchard – Resident Council
Michael Campbell – Can Do Club, mail delivery
Gloria Conn – Can Do Club
Norman Daniels – Can Do Club
Harold Davidson – Can Do Club, dining room help, laundry
Charles Hercia – Resident of the Year
Norma Moore – Can Do Club, refrigerator monitoring
Richard Olsen – Can Do Club, dining room assistance
Audrey Pritchard – Can Do Club
James Summers – Can Do Club
Leona Wallace – Can Do Club
Yvonne Wiggins – Can Do Club, Resident Council

A Victorian fashion show hosted by the life enrichment department at Villa Care Centre in Midland was a hit with residents, including two centenarians who participated in the recent event. Mary Furminger, 103, and Robert Ayers, 101, got dressed up in apparel from the era. Staff members also dressed up for the occasion. Life enrichment co-ordinator Anne Cascagnette says there’s an important message here. “It doesn’t matter how old you are, you’re still able to participate in something as remarkable as this,” she says. Cascagnette says events like this are also excellent for creating a fun atmosphere that everyone can enjoy.

The Villa Care Centre and our volunteers, the Huronia Seniors' Volunteer Care Team, are launching their second annual summer coin collection campaign, this year we're calling it Penny Power!  This year our goal is to collect more than $4,200 in pennies…enough to make an 8 km route around Midland.  We've set goals along the route so that when we collect enough pennies to get us to that point we'll take a van full of our residents to that destination for a celebration.  We're very excited about this year's campaign because it's about more than fundraising - it's about getting our residents out into their community. Huronia Seniors' Volunteer Care Team owns and operates a wheelchair accessible van service for residents of the Villa and for members of the community who, because of their need for a wheelchair, could easily become isolated.  The Huronia Senior's service is available days, evenings and weekends, for medical appointments, family and social outings.  It offers their clients an improvement in quality of life. It's a most worthwhile program, but it's also very expensive to maintain.

This campaign represents a significant portion of Huronia Senior's fundraising efforts for the year.  Last year's collection raised approximately $3,300, and this year we're stretching again.  We're spreading the word among our extended Jarlette family, just in case some of you have some pennies to contribute.  Any help is appreciated, together even pennies have power.
