At the age of 37, this gifted musician has already worked his way to becoming Composer in Residence with the National Arts Centre in Ottawa and is about to take up a position as Composer in Residence for the Canadian Opera Company for 2019-2020, among a list of other extraordinary accomplishments.
In this unique edition of A Day in the Life, Ian will sit down with host Fred Hacker to discuss his influences, inspirations and the circumstances that led to his rapid ascent in the music world. And for the first time in the A Day in the Life series, their conversation will take place with a backdrop of musical interludes, with Ian providing illustrations at the keyboard.
Ian is of Métis and French Canadian heritage, and he grew up studying piano, voice, music history, and composition with local teachers right here in Midland. As a composer of art song, orchestral work and opera, Ian’s work explores the Canadian Indigenous experience including the history of the Metis people. His music reflects the intersection of Western and Indigenous cultures and mixed-race identity.
Ian has been the recipient of several grants and awards, is an Associate Composer of the Canadian Music Centre, and a member of the Canadian League of Composers.
We hope you will join us to learn more about this local legend, through song and story!
