Word-of-Mouth Has Greatest Effect
on Moms
If moms weren’t already an attractive enough target for marketers, a Keller Fay study of US internet users and their brand conversations has found that they are more responsive to word-of-mouth than other adults and more likely to help pass on brand messages.

Nearly two-thirds of mothers studied in September 2010 said they typically thought word-of-mouth was credible, 2 percentage points ahead of females in general and 10 percentage points ahead of men. They were also more apt to take action, including passing the information on to others, making a purchase or doing more research on a brand.

The E Myth Revisited by
Michael E. Gerber

Suggested by Christine Forsythe
Michael Gerber's The E-Myth Revisited should be required reading for anyone thinking about starting a business or for those who have already taken that fateful step. The title refers to the author's belief that entrepreneurs--typically brimming with good but distracting ideas--make poor businesspeople. He establishes an incredibly organised and regimented plan, so that daily details are scripted, freeing the entrepreneur's mind to build the long-term success or failure of the business. You don't need an MBA to understand or follow its directives; Gerber takes time to explain buzzwords and complex theories. Written in a clear and well-paced manner, The E-Myth Revisited is like receiving advice from an old friend. --Sharon Griggins

January Dinner Meeting

Date: January 19th, 2011
Where:Penetang Legion, 2 Poyntz Street, Penetang, ON L9M 1M2

In 1980, I had the good fortune to work with a wise man who told me to embrace technology and all the changes it would bring to the newspaper, printing and advertising industries.

Thirty years later, it’s still all about technology and the changes are coming faster than ever.

If you think you’re all caught up, think again. The game changes every day. Got a website? Good for you. If that’s all your business has to offer, technologically, you’re already dead in the water.

Here’s the thing – if you’re in business you have to be today where the people are going tomorrow. If you have kids with cell phones, you already know the answer. It’s going mobile, and so should you.

Branding - Start with your brand. Great branding makes the manufacturer’s name synonymous with the product. Got the sniffles? Do you reach for a tissue or a Kleenex. Do you drink rum and Coke or rum and cola? You get the picture. Remember when you used to tell the kids to “go look it up”? Now they tell you to “just Google it”.

No matter how small your operation, taking a branding approach is good business. Providing a consistent customer experience from a to z has worked for McDonald’s, Tim Hortons and Apple. And it can work for you.

Social – Local – Mobile - Your business can’t rely on simple Google searches anymore. The future of marketing is in the palm of your customers’ hand. If they can’t find you there, they’ll find a similar business or service that is. People have the world in their smart phones and they can get the information they want wherever and whenever.

In today’s market there’s one piece of advice that should drive your marketing plans. Don’t invest in any marketing or advertising that doesn’t provide measurable results. And if it isn’t bringing people through the door, drop it. Social media sites like Facebook, Twitter and Linked-In are a must have – just look at any consumer goods website and there are links to each of them.

Googles’ Places puts your business on the map. It’s free and all you have to do is claim it. Want to rise to the top in local searches? Reviews and citations are the currency of SEO. Local search media like Shop Midland and Shop Penetang provide levels of service that enables online shopping for your clients and a place for them to praise or punish you for your quality and level of service.

The next layer of measurable media marketing is mobile. Say that really fast three times! Text messaging, QR codes, landing pages and coupons put your business where it needs to be with timely, valuable offers and information. Is your head spinning yet? You have two choices – business as usual or business 2010. Join me on January 19th for a closer look at the future of business marketing.

Dear MDBWA Members,

At our last meeting I, Dr. Sue Lyons – Chiropractor & Founder of Health Works Chiropractic & Wellness Centre was the lucky lady who won advertising at our last meeting. This message is about “Paying it Forward”.

I would like to take this opportunity to speak highly of Sladjana, Owner of Midland Optical.

This is my story:

One day after work, I was going to pick up Baby James at the babysitters. When pulling into the driveway I notice a senior citizen lying on the ground in a pile of leaves, on the side of the road. He obviously was injured and was unable to get up on his own. I hopped out of the car and ran over to him to help him. His fall was bad. He managed to hit his face, shoulder and side. His eye glasses cut into his face and he was bleeding.

We sat together on the hard ash vault for quite some time, so I could check him over and make sure he did not suffer any fractures, and stop the bleeding. We took that time to meet one another and learn about each other. This is a reality check for all of us to slow down and listen. This poor man was just diagnosed with cancer last week, and was not doing well. He continued on with his story and it only got more complicated. If you think your life is hell, think again and be grateful for all that you have. Life was not going in the right direction for this man. After sometime had passed another car stopped and we managed to get him in my car. Baby James and I took him home to a very worried family.

The next day my first call was to Sladjana at Midland Optical. I told her of my story and asked her for help. I told her I wanted to pay for a new pair of glasses for this man. She said YES before I could even finish my story. (Thank you again Sladjana). Sladjana was able to help me with some of the expenses. So, the next day I visited my new friend. He was badly bruised, and in tears from his gratuity for me stopping. I told him it was destiny that our paths have crossed and that it was my pleasure to tell him that I have already looked after his eye glass replacement expenses & for him to go and see Sladjana at Midland Optical. Tears continued to poor down this gentleman’s face. It was obvious that he needed some help, and that help had arrived. “If life gives you lemons, make lemonade.”

To this day I remain grateful that we have so many respected & professional Business Women in our MDBWA’s group. Thank you Sladjana from Midland Optical.

Ladies, please remember to listen to others, helping others can bring such happiness from within yourself & to others. It costs you nothing to be kind to another person. Ask for help & live each day to its’ fullest!

It was my pleasure to meet him and help this stranger!

Sincerely,

Dr. Sue Lyons D.C., HBK, B.Sc.
Founder of Health Works Chiropractic & Wellness Ctr.
