Of all persons with disabilities, those with a serious mental illness face the highest degree of stigmatization in the workplace, and the greatest barriers to employment. At the Hero Centre, we make efforts to educate our community about mental health and want to create opportunities that will compliment our clients needs as well as local employers.

Seeing the person before the illness is common practice at the Hero Centre. After all, we wouldn't identify a person as their heart condition, diabetes or cancer would we?...they are a person first. It's Mental Illness Awareness week.

A big thank you to Waterside Management who provided employment opportunities for several of our clients this summer. Duties ranged from yard clean up, to general landscaping, weeding, trimming and grass cutting. We are looking for all types of employment including odd jobs, ultra part time to full time jobs. Myth: People with mental illness can work low-level jobs but aren't suited for really important or responsible positions. Fact: People with mental illness, like everyone else, have the potential to work at any level depending on their own abilities, experience and motivation.
