5 Common Air Conditioner Problems and How to Solve Them:

 

In the summertime, your air conditioner is really needed sometimes. What happens if it isn’t working as effectively as it could? Wasted money, wasted energy, and an uncomfortable home are all consequences of the most common air conditioner problems we see.

Today, we’re identifying the five most common air conditioner problems we hear about it, and what you can do to fix them.

1. Uneven Cooling

Your living room is hot, and your bedroom is cold. You may have a problem with uneven cooling and heating. This could be because of blocked vents or poor insulation.

What to do? First, identify the underlying problem — calling in a heating and air conditioning technician is a quick way to do so and repair services are likely needed.
 

2. AC Unit Blows Warm Air

If your air conditioner is making your home more hot than cold, there’s a problem. There are many causes for this, but some of the most common include:

- An incorrectly set thermostat – not set to cooling.

- A restriction in airflow. Either the air filter might need to be replaced or if you haven’t had maintenance done on your air conditioner this year, that could be a cause.

- The outside unit isn’t getting electricity. A circuit could be tripped, or a fuse blown. If this is continually happening, it likely points to a bigger problem

- It could also be a problem with the outside unit, or your unit could be low on refrigerant.

- In any case (besides the thermostat) your best bet is to call in an air conditioner technician to look at the problem.
 

3. AC Cycles On and Off Repeatedly

Short cycling is one of the most common problems and it can also cost the most if it’s not dealt with in time. Typical causes include:

- Thermostat location. Thermostats located too close to a supply vent or in direct sunlight may be getting inaccurate readings. Also, beware of thermostats that are located too close to the TV or other electronics that emit heat.

- Dirty air filter. This is a common cause of AC problems. Airflow restriction can cause a whack of troubles, including a frozen evaporator coil. If this is the case, replace or clean your air filter on a regular basis.

- Leaking refrigerant. If this coolant is malfunctioning, it will affect pressure levels. You’ll need to call in an AC tech to fix the leak.

 

4. Air Conditioner is Running Continuously

Another common problem people have is that their air conditioner never stops running. This can be caused by several things:

- Dirty or frozen evaporator coil.

- Clogged air filter or restrictive air filter.

- Low refrigerant.

- Faulty thermostat.

- Dirty or blocked condenser.

- Blower motor and fan issues on the furnace.

Regular maintenance will solve most of these issues and an HVAC technician can help determine the exact cause.

 

5. Frost and Ice Inside the AC Unit

If your central air conditioner is frosted over on the inside, there are two main issues that could be causing it: weak or reduced air flow over the evaporator coil or, the more common cause, low refrigerant.

If this has happened to you, you can turn off the unit, let it defrost, change your air filter if it’s dirty, and call a professional for assistance.
