SPRING CLEANING YOUR FURNACE: THE ULTIMATE GUIDE

Spring Cleaning Your Furnace:

The Ultimate Guide

When the warmer weather comes, it’s tempting to shut off your furnace and forget about it until fall. But before you switch over to air conditioning, there’s one important step you won’t want to forget: furnace cleaning.

Like the rest of your house, spring cleaning is the perfect time to take stock of your furnace maintenance. So, while you’re washing windows, cleaning out gutters, and sorting through clutter, we recommend a bit of furnace cleaning, too. Here’s what you need to know:

Spring is the perfect time for furnace cleaning

Think of your furnace like a car — throughout the winter, it’s been running for miles and miles. After going for so long, your HVAC unit will work better in the long run if you stop for a tune-up. While many people wait until fall for furnace maintenance, there’s a definite benefit to getting it done in the spring. For one thing, you won’t be caught off guard when the cold weather hits again, and for another, you’re already cleaning your house, so adding furnace cleaning to the list now is likely to be less onerous than pushing it off for another few months.

What you can DIY

While certain parts of furnace maintenance require an HVAC professional, there is some furnace cleaning you can do yourself.

1. Check/replace the furnace filter. If your current filter is dusty or discoloured, it likely needs to be replaced. Do so now while cleaning is on the brain.

2. Clean the outside of the unit.

3. Clean your bathroom exhaust fans

When to call in an HVAC professional

We recommend getting professional furnace maintenance done at least once a year, which many choose to wait until fall to do. However, getting a professional tune up in the spring can also be a good option as it means one less thing to do in the fall. Whatever you choose, sticking to a regular calendar will help you remember to get it done.

Spring cleaning is also a great time to assess whether your furnace needs replacing. Were you hearing strange noises during the winter? It’s unlikely a few months of non-use is going to fix anything and the last thing you want is to turn on your furnace when the weather gets cold and have it not work.

Whether you’re in need of a new furnace, air conditioner or maintenance, G.O. Heating can help. We’re your source for quality furnaces and HVAC units. Ask us about our furnace maintenance plans so you’re covered anytime — during spring cleaning or otherwise.
