NATURAL MEDICINE

What is Natural Medicine?
Natural medicine uses various natural therapies to stimulate the body’s innate ability to heal itself. Practitioners examine, diagnose and treat patients using programs tailored to the individual and their specific health condition.

This holistic approach takes into account the primary systems that effect health – physical, mental, emotional and spiritual. Treatment often eliminates the need for long term medical care or prescription drugs by focusing on the underlying causes of an illness rather than the symptoms.

By educating the person in the cause of their health problem and how to relieve or eliminate it, natural medicine places an emphasis on a preventative approach to healing.

Who Can Benefit?
Virtually all persistent and many short lasting conditions may benefit from natural therapies. Natural medicine may be used for both the prevention and treatment of many health concerns and often with far fewer side effects than conventional prescriptions.

Women’s health such as menopause, PMS, endometriosis, infertility, fibroids, pediatric concerns including asthma, recurrent ear infections, hyperactivity, ADD, ADHD, Digestive disturbances such as irritable bowel diseases, gas, bloating, reflux, constipation, and heart burn.

Cardiovascular conditions of hypertension and high cholesterol.
Musculoskeletal conditions such as fibromyalgia, arthritis. Skin problems such as acne, eczema, psoriasis, poison ivy. Immune system difficulties including autoimmune diseases or allergies. Other conditions include diabetes, headaches, depression and anxiety.

How Does Natural Medicine Work?
Natural medicine utilizes a variety of techniques to promote the healing process.

Homeopathy – Homeopathic Medicine is based on the principle of “like cures like” where minute amounts of natural substances are used to stimulate the body’s self-healing abilities. This is an extremely safe treatment modality and is frequently used for multiple-medicated individuals, in pregnancy/lactation, for small children and elderly.

Botanical Medicine – Uses herbs or plants for healing and is the foundation of modern pharmacology. Plants substances are used for both their healing effect and nutritional value, with often fewer side effects.

Clinical Nutrition – Examines the relationship between diet and health. Special diets may be recommended, and treatment may include nutritional supplements, vitamins, minerals or enzymes.

Lifestyle Counseling – Incorporates the physical, emotional, nutritional and environmental factors that affect health. Naturopaths guide you to more effective lifestyle choices.

Iridology – Uses marks and signs in the iris to assist in determining the conditions of various organs and systems. This represents a detailed picture of the body’s integrity also its inherent strengths and weaknesses.

What can I expect?
Your first consultation involves an in depth medical history and discussion of your health concerns. Any appropriate physical exams or tests will follow and allow a personalized treatment plan to be designed to suit you. The consult usually takes between 60 and 90 minutes.

Will I need to return for other visits?
Follow-up visits are booked as necessary to review progress and to make appropriate changes to your treatment program. The usual follow-up appointment for a long standing problem is one month. The number of treatments varies according to the severity, complexity and how chronic or long term your condition is. Your practitioner should give you a time line and let you know how soon you should expect to see results.

Will my prescription medications interfere with treatment?
Often after a visit your natural therapist will prescribe 3-4 medicines and supplements to support, speed or enhance recovery. Practitioners are trained to determine exactly how these will interact with your other prescriptions to ensure your safety. In some cases you will find the need for your traditional medicine to be decreased or be stopped. If this is the case, you will often require supervision and co-ordination between your natural therapist and your MP. (Medical Practitioner)

What if I have more than one health concern?
Due to the holistic approach to Natural Medicine, clients often feel that treatment for one area can bring about a wellness change in many other areas. Your primary health concern warrants the main treatment focus and once this is improving, you can choose to return in order to optimize health by ensuring other concerns are looked after.
