Preventive Measures to Avoid Plumbing Disasters

Preventive Measures to Avoid Plumbing Disasters

Plumbing emergencies can strike when least expected, causing not just inconvenience but potentially significant damage to your home. At Triple Tech, serving the Simcoe County and Southern Georgian Bay area, we believe in empowering our clients with knowledge to prevent such crises. Here are expert tips to keep your plumbing system in top shape:

Be Vigilant for Leaks

Small leaks can quickly escalate into major issues. Regularly inspect your pipes, faucets, and under sinks for any signs of dripping water. Early detection can save you from extensive water damage and costly repairs.

Know Your Pipes

Understanding the type of pipes in your home (PVC, copper, etc.) and their condition is crucial. If your home is older, it might be time for an inspection to assess the risk of burst pipes.

Watch What Goes Down the Drain

Clogs are a leading cause of plumbing emergencies. Be mindful of what you flush down the toilet and pour down the sink. Avoid disposing of grease, coffee grounds, and non-flushable items - especially wipes - in your drains.

Prepare for the Cold

In Canada’s chilly climate, frozen pipes are a common issue. Insulate exposed pipes and keep your home at a consistent temperature to prevent freezing. Know how to shut off your water in case a pipe does burst.

Schedule Regular Maintenance

Annual check-ups by a professional plumber can identify potential problems before they become emergencies. Triple Tech offers comprehensive plumbing services to ensure your system remains reliable year-round.

Invest in Quality Fixtures

Opting for high-quality plumbing fixtures can reduce the likelihood of leaks and failures. Consider upgrading older fixtures to more durable and efficient models.

Top 6 Tips for Cleaner and Healthier Indoor Air

Top 6 Tips for Cleaner and Healthier Indoor Air

In the pursuit of a healthier and more comfortable home, one aspect that often goes overlooked is your indoor air quality. Poor indoor air quality can lead to various health issues including respiratory problems and allergies. In this blog, we'll explore the importance of indoor air quality and share some valuable tips to help you maintain a cleaner and healthier indoor atmosphere.

Regularly Change Your Filters

The air filters in your HVAC system play a crucial role in trapping dust, pollen, pet dander, and other airborne particles. Over time, these filters can become clogged, which reduces their effectiveness and allows pollutants to circulate throughout your home.

To ensure cleaner air, it's essential to change your air filters regularly, typically every 1-3 months, depending on usage and the filter type. If you have pets or smoke indoors, you will need to change your filters more regularly.

Clean Your Ducts

Ductwork is the highway through which conditioned air travels in your home. However, if your ducts are dirty, they can become a breeding ground for allergens and bacteria. Professional duct cleaning can remove dust, mold, and other pollutants, improving your indoor air quality and preventing potential health issues.

Maintain a Clean Living Environment

Keeping your home clean and well-ventilated is essential for good IAQ. Regularly vacuuming carpets and rugs with a HEPA filter-equipped vacuum cleaner can reduce dust and allergens. Additionally, keeping windows open when weather permits allows fresh outdoor air to circulate and dilute indoor pollutants.

Invest in An Air Purifier

While your HVAC system and regular maintenance can help maintain good indoor air quality, consider enhancing it further with the use of air purifiers. Air purifiers are designed to capture and eliminate airborne particles and pollutants, such as pollen, dust, pet dander, and even bacteria and viruses, and HEPA filters are highly effective at trapping tiny particles which makes them an excellent choice for allergy sufferers.

Consider An Air Humidifier

Air humidifiers are a valuable addition to your indoor air quality toolkit. These devices add moisture to dry indoor air which is especially beneficial during the dry winters we endure in Simcoe County. By maintaining optimal humidity levels, humidifiers can alleviate issues like dry skin and sore throats.

Seek Professional HVAC Maintenance

Regular HVAC maintenance is critical to ensuring the efficiency of your system and the quality of your indoor air. At Triple Tech, our skilled technicians can inspect your HVAC system, clean components, and identify potential issues before they become major problems.

This proactive approach not only enhances indoor air quality, but also extends the lifespan of your HVAC equipment and ensures that you’re ready for the tough winter season that’s quickly approaching.

To schedule a maintenance check or to learn more about the advantages of a Bryant air humidifier or air purifier, give us a call today at 705-333-8324.

Preparing for Fall: Your September HVAC Checklist

Preparing for Fall:
Your September HVAC Checklist

As the leaves start to fall and the temperature begins to drop, it's important to properly prepare your HVAC system for the upcoming fall and winter seasons. Not only will this help ensure your system performs efficiently, but it can also prevent any unexpected breakdowns when you need it the most.

Let's go through a few tasks that you can add to your September HVAC checklist to keep your home comfortable throughout the tough, colder months.

Change The Filter

One of the simplest tasks you can do for your HVAC system is to change the air filter. During the summer months, your air conditioner was working overtime to keep up with the heat, which means the filter may have picked up a lot of dirt and debris. Start the new season by freshening up the filter to keep the air in your home clean and your system running smoothly.

Adjust Your Thermostat

With the cooler weather approaching, it's likely that you won't need your air conditioner running throughout the day. Adjust your thermostat accordingly to save energy and reduce wear and tear on your system. A smart thermostat such as an ecobee can make this task even easier by allowing you to program your home's temperature no matter where you are and provide you with valuable insight into your energy usage.

Check Your Ductwork

Over time, your ductwork can become clogged with dust and debris, which can negatively impact your system's efficiency. Consider having your ductwork professionally cleaned to remove any blockages and improve the air quality in your home. This can also help prevent any potential health issues that may arise from breathing in dirty air.

Get a Furnace Tune-Up

As the winter months approach, it's important to make sure your furnace is ready to handle the workload. Schedule a professional tune-up with an experienced HVAC technician to ensure your system is running at peak performance. A professional tune-up from Triple Tech will not only improve efficiency but may also uncover any potential issues that could lead to costly repairs in the future.

Consider Upgrading Your System

If your HVAC system is outdated or inefficient, now may be the time to consider upgrading to a more modern, energy-efficient system. Incorporating new technologies such as heat pumps and smart thermostats can help you save money on energy bills while also doing your part for the environment.

If you'd like to schedule a tune-up, look into upgrading your HVAC system, or have any other questions, you can call us now at 705-333-8324.

The Great Blackout: A Look Back 20 Years Later

The Great Blackout: A Look Back 20 Years Later

Yes, it's been 20 years since The Great Blackout - a massive power outage that affected millions of people across North America. The blackout was caused by a software bug that caused a chain reaction of events, leading to a collapse of the entire electricity grid. As we remember this historic event, it's important to reflect on the lessons learned and the steps we can take to prevent similar occurrences in the future.

The Great Blackout, which occurred on August 14, 2003, was one of the largest power outages in modern history, affecting more than 55 million people throughout Ontario and across eight U.S. states. As a result, homes and businesses were without power for up to two days, causing chaos and disruption in major cities like Toronto, New York, Cleveland, and Detroit. The cause of the blackout was a software bug in the alarm system at a control room in Ohio. After overloaded transmission lines drooped into foliage, the alarm system failed to alert operators to redistribute the load, and, as a result, the power outage cascaded throughout the northeast regional electricity distribution system.

The impact of The Great Blackout was felt across all sectors of society, from transportation and healthcare to commerce and communication. The lack of power disrupted public transportation, causing major delays and cancellations, and hospitals and other healthcare facilities were forced to rely on backup generators which put patients' lives at risk. Businesses lost millions of dollars in revenue, and people were left without access to essential services like their phones and the internet.

Of course, hindsight is 20/20 and we now know that having a reliable backup power source like a Generac Generator is critical during times of grid failure or natural disasters. With a backup generator, you can ensure that your home, business, or organization remains powered and functional during emergencies. Generac Generators come in different sizes and capacities, depending on your needs, so you can find the perfect generator to suit your specific requirements.

With advancements in technology and innovation, we've come a long way since The Great Blackout. Modern electrical systems are more sophisticated and reliable, and the introduction of smart grids has enabled better management and control of electricity distribution. However, you can never be too certain that failure won't happen and it's best to take the time to properly prepare yourself with a Generac Generator that'll keep your home's lights on and your business running smoothly. To learn more and find the unit that's right for you, call us now at 705-333-8324.

Top 5 Cost-Efficient Summer Cooling Tips to Keep Your Energy Bills Low

Top 5 Cost-Efficient Summer Cooling Tips to Keep Your Energy Bills Low

The scorching summer heat is upon us, and it’s time to switch on the air conditioner. But, with every degree drop in the temperature, your electricity bills spike up, leading to a huge dent in your wallet. At the same time, we all deserve a comfortable, cool space to unwind and relax in.

So, how do we solve the problem of keeping cool AND energy efficient?

Utilize Ceiling Fans

To reduce energy consumption, utilize ceiling fans as they cost less to operate than most AC units. They’re also great when combined with an AC unit, making the temperature feel cooler by allowing the air to circulate throughout the room.

Seal Cracks and Openings

Take a walk around your home and investigate for any openings or cracks that are letting the hot air in. If you find any, tackle them with weatherstripping, caulking, or foam sealant. Sealing up gaps closes off any infiltration routes for exterior contaminants and ensures a more comfortable winter when the time comes.

Operate Your Thermostat Efficiently

If you feel the need to grab a sweater during the afternoon in your home, it's time to adjust your thermostat and save some significant dollars in the process.

A Wi-Fi enabled thermostat is a great tool in this endeavour. These handy devices allow you to control the temperature of your home remotely using your smartphone, even when you're away - which means you can adjust the settings to consume less energy when no one is home, and then set it to cool down right before you return. These smart devices also learn your routine over time and can make adjustments automatically to optimize energy usage, further lowering your energy bills.

LED Lights

Replace your traditional light bulbs with LED bulbs, the most energy-efficient lighting option on the market right now. They use 75% less energy, last about 25 times longer, and run much cooler than standard incandescent lights. Switching to LEDs is an easy and affordable way to reduce your energy costs during the summer.

Have Your AC Filter Checked

A dirty and clogged filter significantly reduces your AC’s efficiency, resulting in it having to work harder to cool down the room while consuming more energy. If you feel that your AC unity isn't working as efficiently as it normally does, have your filter checked and changed if needed. You should also get your AC unit serviced regularly to ensure that all parts are in working order and won’t break down when you need it most.

You don't have to be an HVAC specialist to reduce your energy costs during the summer months. So consider these tips, and let's beat the heat while keeping our carbon footprint low and reducing our energy bills. If you have any questions about your AC unit, the possibility of a newer, energy efficient model, or wifi thermostats, you can learn more by calling Triple Tech at 705-333-8324.

Heat Pumps: Keeping You Comfortable Through Every Season

Heat Pumps: Keeping You Comfortable Through Every Season

As a homeowner, you understand the importance of ensuring your home is comfortable throughout the year. Whether it's heating your home in the winter or keeping it cool during the summer, maintaining a comfortable temperature year-round is essential.

If you're searching for a reliable and efficient heating and cooling system, you should consider installing a heat pump.

Efficient and Cost-effective

Unlike traditional HVAC systems that burn fuel to generate heat or cool air, heat pumps transfer heat from one place to another, using electricity to power their compressors and fans. This technology not only helps to reduce energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions but also can have a significant impact on your energy bills.

Investing in a heat pump system can help you save money and contribute to a more sustainable environment, making it a smart choice for homeowners looking to reduce their carbon footprint.

Versatile

One of the biggest advantages of a heat pump system is its versatility. Unlike traditional heating and cooling systems, heat pumps can both heat and cool your home, meaning you only need one system to manage your indoor temperature throughout the year. This feature makes a heat pump an excellent choice for homeowners looking for an all-year-round indoor comfort solution.

Improved Indoor Air Quality

Compared to other systems, a heat pump circulates air more evenly, which can help to reduce hot or cold spots in your home. In addition, heat pumps feature air filters, which help to remove dust, allergens, and other pollutants from the air - a welcomed feature for those who suffer from allergies or respiratory issues.

Quieter Operation

If you're looking for a heating and cooling system that operates quietly, a heat pump system is the way to go. Unlike traditional systems, heat pumps do not require a noisy outdoor compressor unit. Most of the noise generated by a heat pump system comes from the indoor unit and clocks in at about 60 decibels, which is typically quieter than other, more traditional heating and cooling systems.

When it comes to heating and cooling your home, a heat pump system offers several benefits that we've just begun to touch on.

If you're considering installing a heat pump system, it's important to choose the right HVAC specialist. At Triple Tech, we offer expert opinions as well as high quality installation, maintenance, and repair services for all types of heat pump systems. As a Bryant Factory Authorized Dealer, you know we’ll do Whatever It Takes! Get in touch with us today to learn more about how a heat pump can benefit your home and find the model that's right for you by calling 705-333-8324.

Keeping Cool and Energy Efficient With a Smart Thermostat

Keeping Cool and Energy Efficient With a Smart Thermostat

As a homeowner, you're always on the lookout for ways to stay comfortable in your home without breaking the bank, and one way to do that is by investing in a smart thermostat.

Not only does it allow you to control the temperature remotely through your mobile device, but it can also help you save energy and reduce your home’s heating and cooling costs. Let’s explore precisely how a smart thermostat can keep you cool all summer long without supercharging your energy bill.

They’re Easy to Use

Smart thermostats are incredibly easy to use. With just a few clicks on your smartphone, you can adjust the temperature in your home from virtually any location. This makes it perfect for days when you forget to turn off the air conditioner before you leave for work or when you want to adjust the temperature in your home while on vacation.

Additionally, most smart thermostats offer features like learning algorithms, which can adapt to your temperature preferences over time.

They’ll Make Your Home Energy Efficient

One of the major benefits of a smart thermostat is the energy savings they can provide. Traditional thermostats only allow you to program a temperature setting for certain times of the day, but smart thermostats can take into account other factors like outdoor weather conditions and your schedule. By doing so, they can regulate your home’s temperature more efficiently, resulting in noticeable energy savings.

Additionally, some smart thermostats come equipped with energy reports and real-time usage data, making it easier to track your energy consumption and make adjustments as needed.

It’s A Simple Installation

Installing a smart thermostat is relatively simple, especially if you have some experience working with electrical wiring. Most models come with detailed instructions that guide you through the installation process step-by-step. However, if you're unsure or uncomfortable installing it yourself, our team of HVAC professionals is able to get you all set up quickly without any issues.

They’ll Keep You Comfortable All Year Round

Smart thermostats are also designed with the goal of comfort in mind. They offer additional features like geofencing, which uses your smartphone’s GPS to detect when you have left or arrived home to adjust the temperature accordingly.

A smart thermostat can be a valuable investment for any homeowner looking to maximize their home’s efficiency and reduce their energy bills no matter the season.

Keep Your Home Cool and Energy Efficient with a Heat Pump

Keep Your Home Cool and Energy Efficient with a Heat Pump

With summer almost upon us, homeowners in Simcoe County are looking for ways to stay cool without breaking the bank. A heat pump is a great solution for this as it is an energy efficient way to both cool and heat your home.

Let's take a closer look at how a heat pump works and the biggest advantages of having one installed in your home.

How a Heat Pump Works

A heat pump is a mechanical device that transfers heat from one place to another. In the case of a home system, it takes the heat from inside and moves it outside, keeping your home cool. In the winter, it takes heat (yes, heat!) from the outdoors and moves it inside. The heat pump itself doesn't produce any heat or cool air. Instead, it uses refrigerant to absorb and transfer heat.

Energy Efficiency

One of the biggest advantages of a heat pump is its energy efficiency. Heat pumps use far less electricity than traditional heating systems like furnaces or electric baseboards because they move heat from one place to another, rather than generating heat. This can result in significant savings on your energy bills.

Dual-Purpose System

Another advantage of a heat pump is that it's a dual-purpose system! It can be used to both heat and cool your home, which means you don't need separate systems for each season. This further saves you money on equipment and installation costs.

Environmentally Friendly

Another advantage of a heat pump is that it is environmentally friendly. Heat pumps consume less electricity, which means using them results in fewer greenhouse gas emissions. This makes them a great option for homeowners who want to reduce their carbon footprint.

Improved Air Quality

Heat pumps do not produce any pollutants or emissions, which means they are better for indoor air quality. They also come equipped with air filters that can help remove dust, allergens, and other pollutants from the air, which can be especially beneficial for people with respiratory issues, allergies, or asthma.

A heat pump is an excellent option for homeowners in Simcoe County who want to stay comfortable without breaking the bank on energy bills. It’s energy-efficient, environmentally friendly, and versatile. With a wide variety of heat pump options offered by Bryant, Triple Tech is able to help you find the unit that's right for you and your home to keep your home climatized precisely to your liking all year round.

How Efficient is Your Air Conditioner?

How Efficient is Your Air Conditioner?

The efficiency of your air conditioner is indicated by its SEER (Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio) rating, which is a rating that tells you how efficiently your unit uses electricity. In general, the higher the SEER rating, the less electricity your unit will use to cool your home.

The typical SEER rating of air conditioners made before 1992 is about 6.0. In 1992, the government established the minimum cooling efficiency standard for units installed in new homes at 10.0 SEER. In 2006 the government established the new minimum rating at 13.0 SEER. High-efficiency units have a SEER of at least 14.0 and the maximum available is about 23 SEER.

That's great, but what is a SEER Rating?

A SEER rating measures how much cooling a system produces for each unit of energy it consumes over a typical cooling season. The higher the SEER rating, the more efficient the system and the lower your utility bills will be.

For example, if two air conditioners have identical cooling capacities but one has a SEER rating that’s two points higher than the other, the more efficient model will save you 20% on your energy costs over the course of a cooling season. Similarly, if both units are identical in every way except that one has a three-point higher SEER rating than the other, you can expect to save 30% on your energy costs for that season.

Why is Efficiency Important?

As energy costs continue to rise, it’s more important than ever to choose an air conditioner with a high SEER rating to help keep your utility bills low. A new air conditioner is a significant investment, so you want to be sure you choose a unit that will provide lasting value by saving you money on your energy bills year after year.

This also means that while the initial purchase of a new air conditioning unit might appear to be high, the inefficiency of your current AC unit could wind up costing you more in the long run - especially when you factor in the need for constant repairs down the line.

How to Get the Most Out of Your Air Conditioner

In addition to selecting an air conditioner with a high SEER rating, there are other steps you can take to ensure that your unit is running as efficiently as possible, such as:
  • Regularly change or clean your air filter to ensure proper airflow
  • Schedule annual maintenance checks with a qualified HVAC technician
  • Make sure your ductwork is properly sealed and insulated
  • Upgrade to a programmable thermostat so you can better control indoor temperatures

Maintaining a comfortable indoor temperature during hot summer months doesn't have to be expensive or difficult, as long as you have a high-efficiency air conditioner that you’re taking good care of. If you're in the market for a new AC unit, make sure to choose one with a SEER rating of 14 or higher and our team here at Triple Tech can provide you with the unit that’s perfect for your home or business. Smoke detectors are an extremely important part of keeping your home safe, so make sure they are always functioning correctly. This checkup should include testing to see if the batteries are working and replacing them if necessary. Additionally, if you're worried about the age of your smoke detectors, there's no better time than now to replace them.

Furnace Filters

As the winter months come to an end, it is important to remember that your furnace filter needs to be checked. This filter has been collecting all of the same particles, dust and allergens for months, which can make your home a breeding ground for bacteria. By doing a quick check and change of this filter, you can help prevent air quality issues as well as prolong the life of your furnace.

Carbon Monoxide Detector

Another important task on your spring to-do list is making sure that your carbon monoxide detector is working properly. Much like smoke alarms, you should be checking these every couple of months to make sure everything is functioning as it should be. If your carbon monoxide detector isn’t beeping when tested, that could mean that it needs a new battery or the unit needs to be replaced entirely.

Update Thermostat Settings

Finally, now that spring is almost here, it’s time to update our thermostat settings! Making sure your temperatures are set correctly throughout the day is the easiest way to keep your energy bills low. This is made even easier with a smart thermostat, allowing you to set temperature schedules and adjust them from anywhere - no matter how far away from home you are.

Taking these four simple steps before spring arrives helps ensure that your home will function safely and efficiently as we head into spring! And if you ever experience any issues with any of these components of your home HVAC system, you can always count on Simcoe County's favourite team of HVAC specialists at Triple Tech for help with anything from repairs to replacements – no matter what time of year it may be!

Why It's So Important To Check Your Pipes In Winter

Why It's So Important To Check Your Pipes In Winter

Winters in Simcoe County can be harsh. As temperatures remain well below freezing for months on end, frozen pipes can become a major problem. When pipes freeze, they're at risk of bursting, which can lead to major damage throughout your home or cottage.

To avoid these costly scenarios, homeowners in Simcoe County need to make sure their pipes are checked throughout the winter season. This is especially important if you’re a Snowbird or a cottage owner who is not regularly on-site.

The Three Major Benefits of Pipe Maintenance

Regular pipe maintenance is essential to keep your plumbing systems running smoothly and to avoid any potential disasters. By being proactive about getting your pipes checked, you're able to:

Avoid Costly Repairs

As mentioned, one of the most important reasons to check your pipes regularly is to avoid expensive repair costs down the road. From the repairs of the damaged pipes to the extensive water damage to nearby walls, ceilings, and floors, the effects of a burst pipe can be devastating.

Regular maintenance helps ensure that minor problems don’t snowball into major ones.

Reduce the Risk of Burst Pipes

Frozen water expands in pipes when temperatures dip below freezing. This puts your pipes at risk of bursting if left unchecked for too long. Pipes freeze easier when they aren't insulated properly, which gives you the double-whammy of paying for increased energy costs.

Throughout the winter, make sure to look out for potential signs of frozen pipes. These include reduced water flow or no flow at all, strange-coloured water, and odd odours coming from fixtures connected to the affected line. Having an experienced plumber come out and inspect your piping system will give you peace of mind knowing that everything is up-to-date, functioning properly, and insulated well so that you won't have to worry about any surprises this season.

Keep Hot and Cold Water Running Smoothly

Finally, checking your pipes ensures that water will continue to run smoothly throughout your home all winter long. This means no more ice cold showers or having to wait for hot water after turning on the tap. A quick check from our local team of experts can help ensure that your water flows successfully all winter long, no matter the conditions.

By being proactive today, you can avoid disaster tomorrow when you bring in Midland's favourite team of experts to assess any possible plumbing issues your home or cottage may have. Request your consultation today at 705-333-8324.

The Top 4 Benefits of a Multi-Staging Furnace

The Top 4 Benefits of a Multi-Staging Furnace

A multi-staging furnace is one of the most efficient ways to heat your home during the winter. A multi-staging furnace can adjust heating output in small increments, which allows it to maintain a comfortable temperature throughout your home without wasting excess energy. Let's take a look at how these furnaces operate and the benefits they can provide to your home.

How a Multi-Staging Furnace Works

A multi-staging furnace works by adjusting its output in small increments over multiple stages in order to achieve the desired temperature. This means that instead of having one large blast of heat, it adjusts its output slowly and in smaller steps as needed. This helps keep temperatures steady while also reducing energy consumption, as you’re not running your furnace at full power when it’s not necessary.

The biggest advantage that multi-staging furnaces have over single-stage furnaces is their efficiency, since they're able to use much less energy to maintain a comfortable temperature than single-stage furnaces are capable of.

The Four Best Benefits Of Multi-Staging Furnaces

Comfort

Since multi-staging furnaces are able to adjust their output more precisely than single-stage units, this makes them ideal for maintaining a consistent temperature throughout your home no matter what time of year it is. You won’t have to worry about hot and cold spots or drafts from windows or doors anymore!

There is also significant increase in comfort and indoor air quality as air is moving slower, and more often the air will pass the UV light and filter.

Efficiency

As mentioned, multi-staging furnaces are incredibly efficient compared to single-stage units. They use much less energy for heating your home because they don’t have to run at full power all the time, which also reduces wear and tear on your unit and helps save you money on maintenance in the long run.

Quieter Operation

Multi-staging furnaces generate far less noise than their single-stage counterparts. This is due to their ability to make small adjustments rather than powering up and down constantly like single-stage units do. This makes them ideal for homes with light sleepers who need peace and quiet during nap times or bedtimes.

Longevity

Multi-staging furnaces cycle less often, which means that they start and stop less often. In this case, they can be compared to your vehicle. If you had to shut your car off and restart it each time you came to a stop, the parts would certainly wear out sooner. Ultimately, less cycling means that you’ll be able to enjoy many years of trouble-free operation from your furnace.

Keeping warm in Simcoe County can seem like a daunting and expensive task, but with the right furnace and the right advice from Triple Tech, you can keep your home, family, and friends feeling comfortable all winter long.

Modulating Furnaces - The Key to a Warm, Efficient Home This Winter

Modulating Furnaces - The Key to a Warm, Efficient Home This Winter

When the mercury dips and the snow starts to fly, there's nothing more important than having a reliable furnace to keep your home warm and comfortable. But with so many different types of furnaces on the market, it can be tough to know which one is right for you.

If you're in the market for a new furnace this winter, it's time to learn why a modulating furnace is your best bet.

What is a Modulating Furnace?

Put simply, a modulating furnace is a type of furnace that uses a variable-speed blower motor to heat your home. This means that the furnace can operate at different speeds depending on the temperature outside and the amount of heat required to maintain a comfortable indoor temperature. By adjusting the speed of the blower motor, the modulating furnace can provide just the right amount of heat for your home, which leads to greater efficiency and decreased energy costs.

Benefits of a Modulating Furnace

More Efficient

Modulating furnaces are more efficient than traditional furnaces as they can operate at lower temperatures. This means that less energy is required to heat your home, which can lead to lower heating bills. Additionally, modulating furnaces are able to maintain a more consistent temperature, which can also help to reduce energy costs.

More Comfortable

Because of the consistent temperature your modulating furnace can provide, you won’t have to deal with the temperature fluctuations that can occur with a traditional furnace. They also run quieter than traditional furnaces, which can contribute to an even more comfortable home environment.

Longer Lifespan

Modulating furnaces have a longer lifespan than traditional furnaces as they are built with higher-quality components, and they typically require less maintenance than traditional furnaces which can further extend their lifespan.

Better for the Environment

Modulating furnaces are better for the environment as they emit less carbon dioxide and other pollutants into the atmosphere. Combine that with the fact that they use less energy than a traditional furnace and you're successfully reducing your environmental impact.

Safer for Your Home

Finally, modulating furnaces are a safer option for your home as they have several safety features that traditional furnaces do not have, such as an automatic shut-off feature that turns the furnace off if it begins to overheat. Additionally, many modulating furnaces come with carbon monoxide detectors that will sound an alarm if dangerous levels of carbon monoxide are detected in your home.

Safety, comfort, and efficiency are all key factors when it comes to providing your home with heat. Which is why if you're in the market for a new furnace this winter, Triple Tech is here to provide you with your best option to keep your family comfortable all winter long. For more information, call us now at 705-333-8324.

The Top 5 Benefits Of Using An Air Humidifier During The Winter

The Top 5 Benefits Of Using An Air Humidifier During The Winter

It's no secret that the winter months can be tough on your health. The cold weather and dry air can cause a variety of problems, from dry skin to sore throats. One way to combat these problems is by using an air humidifier. Humidifiers add moisture back into the air, which helps to keep you healthy during the winter.

Let's learn why humidifiers are crucial to have during these dry, winter months.

What Is An Air Humidifier And How Does It Work?

An air humidifier is a device that emits water vapour into the air. The vapour helps to increase the humidity levels in the room, which can help to alleviate some of the problems caused by dry air.

There are many different types of humidifiers available on the market from small tabletop units to larger floor models depending on the size you require. You can even find humidifiers that attach to your furnace or HVAC system, allowing for a truly well regulated climate!

The Benefits Of Using An Air Humidifier During The Winter:

Reduces dry skin

One of the main problems caused by dry air is dry skin. When the humidity levels in the air are low, your skin can become dry and cracked. By using a humidifier, you can help to keep your skin hydrated and looking its best.

Soothes sore throats

Another common problem during the winter is a sore throat. The dry air can cause your throat to become irritated and inflamed. A humidifier can help to add moisture back into the air, which can relieve some of the discomfort associated with a sore throat.

Reduces static electricity

You may have noticed that your hair seems to stand on end more during the winter months. That's because static electricity is more prevalent when the air is dry. By using a humidifier, you can help to reduce the amount of static electricity in your home.

Prevents nosebleeds

Dry air can also cause nosebleeds. The inside of your nose is lined with delicate tissue that can become irritated and inflamed when the air is too dry. A humidifier can help to keep the air moist, which can prevent nosebleeds from occurring.

Helps you sleep better

Lastly, humidifiers can also help you sleep better at night. The moisture in the air can help to reduce congestion and make it easier to breathe.

Most importantly, however, is ensuring your home has uninterrupted heat for the upcoming winter season.

Why Do I Need A Generator?

The reality is, that sometimes the lights go out. Blackouts are a very real concern, especially in the wintertime. A power outage can happen for any number of reasons, from severe weather to a car accident taking out a power line. It's important to have a plan in place for how you'll keep your family safe and comfortable if the power does go out and a generator should be the foundation of that plan.

The Benefits Of Owning A Generator

HVAC 101 - What Does It Stand For And What Are The Services Associated With It?

HVAC 101 - What Does It Stand For And What Are The Services Associated With It?

Most homeowners are familiar with the acronym HVAC, but may not know what it stands for or the full range of services that their HVAC technician should provide. HVAC is an abbreviation for heating, ventilation, and air conditioning, and encompasses a variety of services that your technician should provide twice a year.

Those who are looking to be new homeowners, this guide is for you!

What Are The Full Range Of Services That Your HVAC Technician Should Provide Twice A Year?

The full range of services that your HVAC technician should provide twice a year includes checking your air filters, inspecting your coils, and testing your refrigerant levels. By keeping your HVAC system well-maintained, you can prevent many common problems and keep your home’s air quality at its best.

More than just checking your heating and cooling equipment, an HVAC inspection should also include a thorough examination of your ductwork (if you have ducts, that is!). This is important because your ducts are responsible for distributing both heated and cooled air throughout your home, and if they are not properly sealed or insulated, you could be losing a significant amount of energy.

How Can You Prevent Common Problems With Your HVAC System And Keep Your Home’s Air Quality At Its Best?

There are a few simple things you can do to prevent common problems with your HVAC system and keep your home’s air quality at its best.

The most important thing is to schedule regular maintenance appointments with your HVAC technician. By having your system serviced twice a year, you can catch any small problems before they turn into big (and expensive) repairs.

You should also make sure to change your air filters regularly. Depending on the type of filter you have, you may need to change it monthly or every few months. Those are the types of questions we’re happy to provide answers for.

Finally, try to keep your home as clean as possible. This includes vacuuming regularly and dusting all surfaces. By reducing the amount of dust and dirt in your home, you can avoid clogged air filters and improve the overall air quality in your home.

What Are Some Of The Most Common Problems With HVAC systems?

Some of the most common problems with HVAC systems include dirty air filters, leaks in ductwork, and low refrigerant levels. These minor problems can often be prevented with regular maintenance appointments and by changing your air filters regularly, minimizing the risk that they could balloon into huge issues for your home and wallet.

If you do experience any problems with your HVAC system, it is important to call Triple Tech as quickly as you can. It's important to do regular inspections and maintenance on your AC unit in the spring, so don't wait until it's too late.

A Generator Can Help You Stay Prepared For Any Type Of Weather

A generator can be a valuable asset during any type of weather. In the summer, generator power can help keep your home cool during a blackout and in the winter it can provide heat and light during a power outage.

A generator can also come in handy during severe weather conditions, such as thunderstorms with strong winds that could knock out electrical wiring. Generators Come In A Variety Of Sizes To Fit Your Needs

Generators are a great way to provide backup power in the event of an outage. But with so many different models on the market, it can be tough to know which one is right for you. Here's a quick guide to help you choose the right generator for your needs.

For home use, a small generator should suffice. Look for one that's easy to transport and has enough power to run essential appliances like your fridge and air conditioner. If you live in an area with frequent power outages, you may want to opt for a larger model that can run your entire home.

These Four Reasons Are Why You Should NEVER DO Electrical Work On Your Own

These Four Reasons Are Why You Should NEVER DO Electrical Work On Your Own

With the rise of DIY-culture, everyone tends to think they can become an expert in a home project that needs to be tackled. Afterall, with the amount of YouTube videos and online guides that we all have access to, it’s not surprising that an unfortunate level of confidence can be gained about a topic which many know shockingly little about

The Risk Is Just Too High

While some projects are of minimal risk to get done on your own (like installing a backsplash or putting down flooring), working with electricity can result in serious injury, and sometimes even death depending on the scope of the project you’re working on.

An incorrect rewire could result in an electrical fire, and an accidental touch of the wrong element could have disastrous effects.

You Don’t Have The Required Tools

Even if you take the precautions to make the area you’re working within as safe as you can make it, the tools required to work with electricity such as specific wire cutters or test circuits aren’t typically found in your home.

It’s A Fire Hazard

Exposed wiring is dangerous. Full stop. Working with exposed wiring, which you might expose further by cutting and re-routing can result in an electrical fire, which is an absolute nightmare to try and get under control compared to a traditional fire. Unable to be put out by water, as the water will conduct the electricity and make the fire worse.

If you ever detect an electrical fire, call 911 immediately.

Short-term Savings, Long-term Nightmares

Just because the situation has appeared to be “fixed”, doesn’t necessarily mean it is. When you do the job on your own, incorrect methods may have been applied to your project that could result in several problems down the road, such as continuously blown breakers, overloading that results in electrical fires, frying elements that will need to be replaced, or more mandatory fixes by the experts that result in expenses which eclipse your initial job.

Some jobs it’s okay to take on and handle yourself. Learning fun and useful skills to improve your home is a fundamental part of home ownership. Though working with electricity is not about experimentation. Electricity is dangerous and requires the skills and techniques of the experts to ensure your problem has been thoroughly fixed with safety in mind.

Triple Tech is more than just HVAC. We’re your expert in electrical jobs throughout Simcoe County, and we’ll make sure the job gets done right the first time.

Going Tankless With Your Water Heater In 2022

Going Tankless With Your Water Heater In 2022

As we slowly begin to exit the harsh, winter months, the itch and desire for renovations and upgrades to our houses is beginning to creep in. While there are plenty of ways to add to your home, let’s take a look at how removing your bulky, inefficient water heater and replacing it with a tankless hot water system can drastically improve your household’s standard of living.

They Can Be Significantly More Efficient

In order to maintain a steady level of hot water for your home, a standard water heater will run approximately four hours per day. If you have a 4,000-watt heater being used on the lower end of a schedule for three hours per day at $.10/kWh, that could cost $1.20 per day, about $36.50 per month, or $438 per year.

Because of the in-demand nature of a tankless system, your water is heated only when you need it. According to the U.S. Department of Energy, a home that uses 186L of water/day can be 24%–34% more energy efficient than conventional storage tank water heaters.

They Free Up Room

Removing the big, bulky hot water tank that’s resting in the water closet or basement can free up some much needed room in our homes. In addition to removing the eyesore that a standard hot water tank can be, a tankless system is small, and they can look quite aesthetically pleasing tucked up against the wall.

There Are Two Different Types To Suit Your Need

Just as with traditional tanks, a tankless system offers two different paths depending on what your home is set up for - gas and electrical.

With a gas system, the water is heated over a gas burner, and in an electrical system the water is heated over an electric element.

Gas powered units are capable of producing larger amounts of hot water per minute and are the ideal solution for larger families of more than four members.

Electric powered units are cheaper to purchase and operate, but may not fill the required needs of your household if your home consumes large amounts of hot water.

Both Offer A Long Lifespan

While you might be lucky to get ten years out of a standard water heater, both a gas and electric tankless system will typically last at least twenty years.

Gas powered systems do require more maintenance than an electrical system, and because of this won’t last as long as their electrical counterparts.

Electrical systems can maintain your hot water needs for over twenty years because of the low maintenance required that keeps them operating.

Triple Tech and SCC Electrical are here to help you make an informed decision about tankless water heaters. Give us a call today to book your service or installation appointment at 705-333-8324.

Generac Generators for Your Home or Business

Generac Generators for Your Home or Business

When a storm or natural disaster occurs, it is impossible to predict what effect it could have on your home or business. Storms, equipment failure or damage to the equipment from trees and wildlife can cause power outages at any time and losing power could cause issues for your home and or business. A backup generator will help keep your property protected from a power outage by keeping your HVAC system, appliances, and sump pump running … which can ultimately save you thousands of dollars in property damage.

STANDBY GENERATORS

A standby generator provides the best coverage as it monitors your property’s electrical supply. In the event of a power interruption, the standby generator will switch on automatically and provide power directly to your electrical system through a transfer switch. A transfer switch allows your power supply to switch from utility to your generated power.

Standby generators run on your existing natural gas or liquid propane (LP) fuel supply and sit outside, just like a central air conditioning unit. A backup generator delivers power directly to your property’s electrical system, backing up your entire property or just the most essential items.

Generac also offers a variety of small business power solutions - from easy to maintain small kW natural gas generators ideal for convenience stores, warehouses, and offices - to large multi-megawatt paralleled solutions to ensure that your larger business runs smoothly.

HOW DO I CHOOSE THE RIGHT GENERATOR FOR ME?

Generac has an online sizing calculator that can help you determine the right backup generator. Of course, our Electrical Division would be more than happy to help you choose the right size generator to meet your unique needs.

WHAT'S INVOLVED IN INSTALLING A HOME BACKUP GENERATOR?

Installing a home backup generator is nice and easy for the homeowner. Your installer will prepare the installation site outside your home, place the generator, run the natural gas or LP fuel line, install the transfer switch, and make all of the necessary electrical connections. A test run will be completed to make sure that your backup generator runs properly and then you are ready for your first power outage!

CLEAN ENERGY ALTERNATIVE

With rising energy costs and environmental threats looming, it may seem like there's no relief in sight. Are you looking for a solution that will help you save money, keep your home safe and reduce your carbon footprint? Generac has a battery storage system that builds its power either from solar panels or the electrical grid to help reduce your electric bill and provide backup power during utility power outages. It allows you to use stored energy during peak demand times when electricity costs are high, which ultimately helps reduce your electric bill and save some money. In the case of a power outage, it is ready to supply backup power to your home.

Installing a generator for your home or business is NOT a DIY job. They need to be installed by a licensed professional. Triple Tech and SCC Electrical are here to help. Our technicians are factory trained and certified to install Generac products, as well as maintenance and repairs. Give us a call today to book your service or installation appointment at 705-333-8324. Our staff and technicians are continuing to follow all COVID-19 protocols and best practices for our safety and yours.

Tips on Closing Your Cottage for the Season

Tips on Closing Your Cottage for the Season

Let’s face it. Cottage season is almost over. With Labour Day already passed and the first day of autumn looming, many cottage owners are starting to think about closing up for the winter. In order to avoid any nasty surprises on the next opening day, Triple Tech has compiled some tips to help you close the cottage like a pro.

Plumbing

One of the most important steps of closing or winterizing the cottage is to take care of the plumbing. Any plumber will tell you that it is essential to turn off your main water connection and drain all of your pipes. This will help eliminate the possibility of pipes freezing and bursting over the winter season.

Some cottagers will take the extra step of wrapping their pipes with heating tape. Another additional step that you might want to consider is draining your hot water heater to avoid any damaging - and costly - leaks while you are away. This also applies to the dishwasher, ice maker or any other appliances connected to the water supply. Plumbers also recommend leaving your taps open to allow for any expansion and adding plumber’s antifreeze to drains and appliances. This might be a task best left to the pros, as many homeowners miss a step and do not properly drain.

Since many cottages are “vintage” and passed down through generations, it may be time to consider a professional inspection of your pipes and plumbing systems. Taking a proactive approach to repairs and possible replacements could save you thousands of dollars in the long run, not to mention the headache or inconvenience of dealing with a plumbing emergency.

If you return to the cottage next season and find that your plumbing system has become a sprinkler system, be sure to give us a call.

Electrical

Some cottagers choose to shut off power completely to their property, but this is a personal choice. If you have a sump pump, a security system or exterior lights, shutting down is not an option. Instead, you will want to unplug any and all non-essential appliances and electronics. You may also consider turning off the power supply to your unused appliances and outlets directly at the electrical panel.

Heating/Cooling

No matter what energy source you are using to heat and cool your cottage, it should be turned off safely and properly.

Some cottagers choose to leave their furnace on and thermostat set to the lowest temperature - usually around 10 degrees Celcius - to help prevent frost buildup or extreme temperature changes.

If you have an exterior air conditioning unit that you wish to cover against the elements, be sure to do it securely. A trick of the trade is to leave some air gap between the cover and unit to allow for some ventilation. It is also a good idea to add vent screens and close your fireplace flue to protect against any critters who might want to seek shelter indoors.

Improve Your Indoor Air Quality by Removing Dust, Germs, Odours, Viruses and More!

Improve Your Indoor Air Quality by Removing Dust, Germs, Odours, Viruses and More!

Recent studies by Canadian public health agencies have proven how indoor air quality, in combination with other recommended public health measures, can reduce the spread of COVID-19. The virus causing COVID-19 is known to spread through droplets and aerosols, which represent a risk particularly to people who are in enclosed spaces with poor or improper ventilation. This has forced many businesses and families to more closely consider the IAQ (indoor air quality) in their homes and businesses. Let’s take a look at ways that you can improve your indoor air quality for your family’s best health.

Air Knight IPG Air Purifier

The Triple Tech team is so confident in the quality of the Air Knight IPG air purification system that we have it installed in our own shop and offices! Designed for both residential and commercial use, the Air Knight IPG air purification system utilizes dual technologies to reduce dust, dander, sub-micron particles, odours, air pollutants, VOCs, smoke, and viruses. It is extremely effective in combatting biological growth and bacteria in the air and on surfaces.

The Air Knight IPG is a key part of the IAQ3 platform that integrates three levels of air quality products, each increasing the overall air quality of the space. The result is a dynamic air quality management strategy that provides a complete indoor air quality solution, custom-tailored to your specific needs.

Air Filtration

Air Knight IPG uses ion technology to improve the performance of your system’s existing air filter.

Purification

Air Knight IPG’s next-generation purification neutralizes germs, bacteria, odours, VOCs, and more.

Sterilization

Air Knight IPG sterilizes your HVAC system and reduces contaminants at the source - even when the HVAC system is off!

Are you ready to enjoy germ free indoor air and surfaces? Let the Triple Tech team tell you more about complete indoor air quality solutions, including the Air Knight IPG system. Give us a call today to book your service or installation appointment at 705-333-8324. Our staff and technicians are continuing to follow all COVID-19 protocols and best practices for our safety and yours.

Helpful Tips and Tools for Landlords

Helpful Tips and Tools for Landlords

With the skyrocketing costs of both real estate and building materials, landlords are eager to protect their investments and their tenants. Triple Tech is happy to help with a variety of heating, cooling and plumbing solutions for landlords.

Cheaper Isn’t Always Better

When considering equipment options for your investment property, the lowest-priced option is generally not the best choice. While you don’t need to always choose top-of-the-line products, it is wise to consider the impact of any potential damages, insurance claims or more frequent replacement costs versus the initial cost of equipment and installation alone. As a Bryant Factory Authorized Dealer, we will do whatever it takes to help you choose the right products and equipment for your needs.

Maintaining the Temperature

Ontario landlords are required to maintain a minimum temperature of 20°C/68°F in their units from September 1 to June 15 of each year. Some municipalities may have slightly differing bylaws but this is the industry standard. If you are a landlord who lives offsite, how do you monitor and maintain this vital service requirement? With a WiFi thermostat!

WiFI thermostats allow you to monitor and control the temperature of your property from anywhere on your smartphone or computer. This allows you to raise and lower the thermostat accordingly, or even set timers for vacations, vacant periods, etc. One thing to keep in mind is that a secure WiFi connection is needed so if you don’t live on-site, you will need to work with your tenants to gain access to their network.

HVAC & Plumbing Monitoring Sytems

Water costs have risen an average of 57% over the past 8 years. 1 in 4 toilets leak or run excessively, resulting in higher water bills. Not to mention the cost of a flood!

Triple Tech offers a variety of HVAC and plumbing sensors and systems to alert you when the problem starts, not when it is too late. Property owners can get instant alerts for power outages, sump pump failures, water leaks, flooding, major temperature fluctuations and more. Not only will they help protect your tenants and your property, HVAC and plumbing sensors will also help you save on utility bills, conserve water and allow for better utility budgeting.

The team at Triple Tech is here to help you - and your tenants - stay comfortable and safe! Give us a call today to book your service or installation appointment now at 705-333-8324. Our staff and technicians are continuing to follow all COVID-19 protocols and best practices for our safety and yours.

Stay Comfortable While Staying at Home

Stay Comfortable While Staying at Home

Warmer temperatures are coming! As Ontario continues to work, play and stay at home, it is more important than ever to ensure your family’s comfort and safety. Let Triple Tech help you make your home sweet home even sweeter!

AIR CONDITIONING

If last year was any indication, we will be seeing a real rush on air conditioner installations. Triple Tech is prepared with in-stock A/C units For new or upgraded systems, Bryant Heating & Cooling Systems provides a variety of choices. From modern, highly efficient systems that can pay for themselves in a decade, to high output systems for larger homes and offices. Our professional team will determine the best air conditioning system to make you comfortable and fit your budget.

RESIDENTIAL GENERATORS

A power outage is inconvenient at any time, but especially in the heat of summer or just before you need to log on to an important Zoom meeting! Triple Tech can help you stay cool and connected even when the power goes out with a Generac residential generator.

A permanently installed Generac home backup generator protects your home automatically. It runs on natural gas or liquid propane (LP) fuel and sits outside just like a central air conditioning unit. A home backup generator delivers power directly to your home’s electrical system, backing up your entire home or just the most essential items.

INDOOR AIR QUALITY

Air quality is about more than just being comfortable. A recent study found that we spend about 90% of our time indoors, making indoor air quality more important than ever. Dust and dust mites, pet hair and dander, moulds and mildew, pollen, tobacco smoke (including second-hand smoke), plus any outdoor air pollution that enters your home are all threats to the air we breathe.

Triple Tech is proud to carry a variety of indoor air quality products, including the Bryant Evolution™ Air Purifier. Compact enough to fit most tight furnace/fan coil installations, this whole-home air purifier solution cleans the air flowing through your system. It silently traps 95% of particles. And, with Captures & Kills® technology, it inactivates select airborne pathogens, including the Coronavirus captured by the MERV 15 filter.

PROGRAMMABLE THERMOSTATS

Our smartphones control just about every other aspect of our lives. Why not let them control our thermostats as well! The rule of thumb for summer in Ontario is to keep your house warmer than normal when you are away and lowering the thermostat setting to 78 degrees F (26 degrees C) only when you are at home and need cooling. Programmable and WiFi thermostats make setting and changing the temperature of your home quick and easy. Who wants to jump out of bed just because they forgot to turn down the temperature?

The team at Triple Tech is here to help you stay comfortable! Give us a call today to book your service or installation appointment now at 705-333-8324. Our staff and technicians are continuing to follow all COVID-19 protocols and best practices for our safety and yours.

Opening the Cottage Plumbing for the Season

Opening the Cottage Plumbing for the Season

To many, Victoria Day Weekend is seen as the unofficial start of cottage season. But why wait until the Long Weekend? Getting a head start on opening the cottage means you won’t have to spend the entire weekend prepping for the season. Perhaps one of the most involved parts of opening the cottage is getting your plumbing system back up and running.

While some cottages have pumps that are permanently submerged in the water source, some have a pump that sits under the cottage or in a pump house close to the water. Here are the general steps to follow for a typical land-based pump to get your cottages water system started:

  • Inspect all of your water lines for any obvious damage. If you notice any damages, you will need to make repairs before you begin.
  • Install a new water filter on the pump. This should be done every year at the beginning of the season to maintain the water quality.
  • Connect a hand pump to the water pump priming valve. If you do not have a hand pump you will need to manually fill the lines.
  • Now you can open the priming valve.
  • Draw water from your water source into the line until it fills the line, up to and including the pump.
  • Once full, close the priming valve.
  • Open a cold water tap in your cottage. Just make sure the cold water valve leading into the hot water tank is closed for the time being.
  • Switch on the water pump.
  • Open all other valves that may be between the pump and the cottage. Doing this will help push out the remaining air in the lines.
  • Once the water is running, inspect all water lines for leaks. If there are no leaks, close all taps. Then investigate the pump to make sure that the pressure holds and it is not constantly running when the taps are all closed. If the pump continues to lose pressure and run with the taps closed, there is a leak somewhere that needs to be found.
  • Then once you are sure everything is good to go, you can get the hot water tank ready setup.

A good piece of advice - any time you leave the cottage empty it is always a good idea to turn off the power to both the water pump and the hot water tank. This is advisable because if there is any leakage, your water pump will continuously run in order to maintain pressure in the system. This can ultimately lead to major problems inside your cottage and you could return to find a real messy situation.

Are you looking to upgrade your water system at the cottage this year? Some things to consider for your home away from homee are:

  • Water Filtration Systems - There are two main types of water filtrations systems - . physical filtration and chemical filtration. Physical filtration “strains” the water to remove dirt, silt, sand, and sediment from your water. Chemical filtration on the other hand involves passing water through an active material that removes impurities chemically as they pass through.

  • UV Water Treatment Systems - These systems are primarily used for removing viruses and bacteria from water and, unlike chemical water disinfection methods, they do not add any harmful chemical to your water or the environment. Just remember, the UV lights need to be changed yearly!

  • Water Softener Systems - Do you have hard water at the cottage? Using a water softener will help remove calcium, magnesium, and other minerals from your water. There are many different water softener systems available and some even have very low maintenance options.

Has your cottage water system become a sprinkler system? The team at Triple Tech is here to help you out! Give us a call today to book your service appointment for your home away from home now at 705-333-8324. Our staff and technicians are continuing to follow all COVID-19 protocols and best practices for our safety and yours.

Hydronic Heating & Boilers For Your Home

Hydronic Heating & Boilers For Your Home

So, what exactly is Hydronic Heating? In simplest terms, hydronic heating is an energy-efficient home heating system that uses tubing which runs a hot liquid beneath your floor, along baseboard heaters, and even through radiators to heat your home. It is often also referred to as radiant heating.

Hydronic heating systems are popular in new homes and installed during home renovations as many people are beginning to realize the benefits of in-floor heating. There is nothing quite like standing with your bare feet on a warm floor in the winter. If you've ever stood on a warm driveway in the summer, you've felt this type of radiant heating in person. In addition, hot water heat lends itself to zoning for an even higher level of comfort in the home.

Hydronic heating systems have become increasingly popular among families that want added comfort and control in their heating zones, savings through lower heating bills, and a decrease in their environmental impact by making smart green building choices.

Today's hot water systems can deliver the highest comfort levels, as well as economical operation. New gas boilers are up to 95% efficient. Most new boilers modulate the burners based on outdoor temperatures and demand for heat indoors. New circulating pumps are quieter and generally require less maintenance.

Older residential boilers can have an Annual Fuel Utilization Efficiency (AFUE) rating of as little as 60 percent, meaning 40 percent of the burned fuel is wasted. By contrast, ENERGY STAR boilers must have an AFUE rating of at least 85 percent, and some achieve a rating of 97 percent. Thus, switching to an ENERGY STAR boiler can cut your heating bill by up to 35 percent.

All of today's new boilers must have an AFUE rating of 80 percent or more. So if you buy a boiler that doesn't meet ENERGY STAR criteria (85-97 percent efficient), your gas or space heating costs could be five to 15 percent higher!

Triple Tech provides top-notch service and installation of hydronic heating systems and installation, repair or maintenance of boilers in the Simcoe County area. We are here to provide you with warm winters by way of repairs and installations of heating systems for your home or workplace. We carry a full line of Bryant heating systems from you to choose from. As a Bryant Factory Authorized Dealer, we will do Whatever It Takes" to keep you and your family comfortable this winter.

The Benefits of Annual Furnace Maintenance

The Benefits of Annual Furnace Maintenance

Ontario is once again in lockdown and a polar vortex is on the horizon. Now more than ever, it is important to keep your furnace maintained and operating efficiently so that you and your family can stay safe and warm at home. While we have talked about different ways to maintain your furnace in the past, now we want to touch on some of the benefits of having your furnace maintained annually. It is never a good idea to wait until your system is showing signs of problems and potentially leaving you and your family in the cold!

Some of the benefits of regular maintenance and tune-ups of your furnace can include:

  • Helping you Save Money - Regular furnace maintenance will help keep your heating system running efficiently. This can ultimately lead to monthly savings on your energy bills because your furnace will not have to overwork itself to heat your home. And with your potential savings, it will help cover the costs of having your furnace maintained.

  • Maintaining your Warranty - Some warranties include terms that require you to have your system regularly maintained. In order to keep your warranty valid, you will be required to get routine maintenance. This will ensure that your warranty still covers your furnace should anything go wrong during your warranty period.

  • Minimizing Breakdowns - With regular maintenance, any minor issues can be found and dealt with before they become serious problems with your furnace. As well, this can then lead to fewer issues down the road and a reduced need for repairs for your furnace.

  • Extend the Life Cycle - Keeping your furnace maintained regularly can help extend the life cycle of your furnace. A properly maintained furnace can last for well over a decade, letting you get the most out of your investment.

Triple Tech is your leading furnace repair company, specializing in furnace repair, boiler repair, and other heating equipment. At Triple Tech, we are here to provide you with warm winters by way of repairs and installations of heating systems for your home or workplace. The Benefits of Using an Air Purifier in Your Home

The Benefits of Using an Air Purifier in Your Home

With colder weather here and the pandemic still ongoing, many of us will be spending even more time in our homes than ever. Since indoor air is not circulated as much as the air outside, the levels of indoor air pollutants are often 2 to 5 times higher than outdoor levels. This is where an air purifier can help improved the indoor air quality (IAQ) of your home.

Some of the benefits of using an air purifier:

  • Eliminates Harmful Chemicals - There are many external pollutants like nitrogen dioxide and carbon monoxide that can sometimes get inside your home. These gases are commonly found in areas of high motor vehicle traffic. By using an air purifier with activated carbon can help clean these chemical contaminants from your home, avoiding the risk of several health problems.

  • Neutralizes Odors - Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) create an off-gassing odour that is commonly found in paints, aerosol sprays, upholstered furniture, or even air fresheners. These odours can cause nausea, breathlessness, and even affect your cognitive functions. An air purifier will help absorb these VOC odours from your home.

  • Reduces the Chances of Airborne Diseases - Airborne diseases such as the common cold and flu are spread through tiny pathogens floating around. With everyone breathing the same air that’s infected most times everyone in your household might catch it. Air purifiers with HEPA filters can help capture these bacteria and viruses, slowing them from spreading.

  • Relieves Symptoms of Asthma - Approximately 1 in 13 people live with asthma and pollutants such as pet dander, pollen, or dust mites can irritate their airways, causing difficulty breathing. A HEPA filter can capture these pollutants leaving you with cleaner air.

  • Help Improve Sleep - Indoor allergens (such as bacteria, fungi, and dust mites) can trigger allergies or hay fever causing frequent sneezing, coughing, nose congestion, watery eyes, or common allergic symptoms that can disrupt your sleep. Clean purified air can help give you a better night’s rest.

Here at Triple Tech, we carry the Air Knight IPG Air Purification System which is designed to be installed into an existing HVAC system and provide virtually maintenance-free air purification that reduces odours, air pollutants, VOCs (chemical odours), smoke, mould, bacteria, and viruses.

The Air Knight IPG Air Purification System uses a unique bi-polar ionization system providing your air with both positive AND negative ion technology that encourages particles in the air to gather together, making even your existing air filter system better and more efficient than before.

In addition, the IPG model features PX5 technology consisting of UV light energy combined with a 5-metal, quint-metallic core which helps purify the air with pro-active air scrubbers. The high airflow design ensures that the IPG can handle the air volume from today’s high SEER and commercial HVAC systems.

Several organizations have independently tested the Air Knight system, the test results show that the Air Knight Technology to be 99.7% effective in the reduction of the SARS-COVID-2 virus within 20 minutes. As well, the air purification showed a 15% reduction of the airborne pathogen MS-2 Phage every half hour (which has been found to be 8-10 times more difficult to kill than COVID-19).

Here at Triple Tech, we are so confident in the Air Knight IPG Air Purification System that we have it installed in our shop! If you would like to improve the air you breathe in your home and need options and suggestions to improve your indoor air quality, then it's time to bring in the professionals from Triple Tech. We carry a full line of filters, UV lights, full systems and more to improve the IAQ of your home. Give us a call at 705-333-8324 for all your HVAC needs!

Holiday Safety Tips

With winter slowly creeping up on us, people are beginning to decorate their homes for the holidays. But, before you begin to decorate your home it is a good idea to make sure that your home’s electrical system and wiring are safe for the new load that will be placed on your electrical system. Whether it’s a simple string of lights or you’re planning to go full Griswold, Triple Tech is here to make sure you do it safely. Here are some helpful tips to follow to keep your family and home safe during the holidays.

  • When checking your lights, plug each string of lights in individually to make sure they work, replacing any broken or burnt-out bulbs
  • Check the light strings for any cut, knicked or exposed wires.
  • Only use lights and decorations rated for outdoor use Make sure that your extension cords are up to code and also rated for outdoor use. Be sure to keep the connections above ground, snow and water.
  • Use modern lights, while grandma’s old-style lights may look pretty, they can also be a fire hazard.
  • When attaching lights to the house or trees, use insulated holders and not tacks or nails.
  • Never install lights on a tree that comes into contact with powerlines
  • While they are designed to connect, you should never plug more than three light strings together.
  • As well, the plug that you will be using should be a grounded fault circuit interrupter or GFCI. This will shut down if there is an overcurrent. If you need a GFCI installed, the Electrical Division at Triple Tech can help!
  • When stringing lights higher up, you want to use a good sturdy ladder and make sure it is grounded on a solid flat surface Work with a partner who can offer assistance and stability when needed. If the slant of your roof is too steep, you may want to hire an insured professional.
  • And finally, before you flip the switch to light up all your hard work, you will need to check your breaker box. The last thing you want to do is overload the system. If you are using decorative inflatables along with your light display, be sure to read the enclosed manual to see what kind of power draw they will need.

If you have electrical questions or concerns, holiday-related or not, Triple Tech is here to help! Give us a call today to book your appointment with our Electrical Department at 705-333-8324. Our staff and technicians are continuing to follow all COVID-19 protocols and best practices for our safety and yours.

Furnace Maintenance Tips

Furnace Maintenance Tips

With the weather starting to get colder, now is the perfect time to maintain your furnace. A little bit of maintenance now can help eliminate problems once the cold, harsh winter weather sets in. Here are some helpful tips to keeping your furnace running well all season long.

Clean or Replace the Filter

The filter plays a very crucial role in the maintenance of your furnace. The filter helps to remove particles from the air, like dust and hair, to prevent them from clogging up the furnace. Over time, the filter will become clogged with debris which will force the furnace to work harder in order to get air through. It is always a good idea to keep a close eye on your filter, but how often you need to clean or replace it depends on many factors. Shedding pets, smoking in the home and excessive dust can all lead to a dirtier filter faster. A good rule of thumb is to check the filter monthly and if needed wash or replace it.

Use a Programmable Thermostat

A good way to save on your heating bills AND reduce the wear and tear on your furnace is to use a programmable thermostat. A programmable thermostat allows you to set up a schedule that will lower the temperature of your home when you are often away or even sleeping. Triple Tech can install and program WiFi thermostats that will allow you to control the heat of your home from any smartphone or computer.

Make Sure Air Registers are Open and Free of Debris

In order for the furnace to work efficiently, air needs to be able to freely circulate around your home. Make sure none of the air registers in your home are blocked by furniture or have dirt and debris in them. Blocked or dirty registers can account for up to a 50% loss of furnace efficiency.

Keep the Area Around the Furnace Clear

Most furnaces are kept in the basement where we tend to store a bunch of your belongings. It is a good rule of thumb to keep a 3 to 5 feet area around your furnace clear. Keeping things too close to a furnace can be a safety issue, but it also allows air to circulate freely and the furnace to run smoother.

Get Regular Tune-Ups

It is a good idea to schedule a furnace inspection and tune up every year. This will help ensure that your heating system is running at peak efficiency. Just one faulty part can place extra strain on the system which could lead to sudden breakdowns.

Need to book a furnace maintenance or tune-up? Have questions about programmable thermostats, or maybe even a furnace upgrade? The team at Triple Tech is here to help! Give us a call today to book your appointment at 705-333-8324. Our staff and technicians continue to follow all COVID-19 protocols and best practices for our safety and yours.

Improving Indoor Air Quality

Improving Indoor Air Quality

With the ongoing pandemic and colder weather now on the way, we are going to be spending a lot more time indoors. One way that you can help keep your family healthy is by improving the indoor air quality (IAQ) of your home.

What exactly is indoor air quality and how does it affect you? IAQ refers to the air quality within and around buildings and structures, especially as it pertains to the health and comfort of its occupants. Poor indoor air quality has been linked to sick building syndrome, reduced productivity, and even impaired learning. IAQ can be affected by gases (including carbon monoxide, radon, volatile organic compounds), particulates, and microbial contaminants (mould, bacteria). Understanding and controlling common pollutants indoors can help reduce your risk of indoor health concerns.

As we prepare to switch on our furnaces, now is the time to check your indoor air quality. Here are some tips to help improve it.

Keep Your Home Clean

Keeping a clean home can lead to a healthy home because it can greatly cut down on dust and animal dander. Some things to focus on when cleaning are:

  • Vacuuming carpets and area rugs at least once or twice a week with a vacuum with a HEPA filter.

  • Regularly clean bedding, drapes and other items that collect dust and allergens.

  • Getting rid of clutter in the home as it can trap and hold dust.

Clean and Maintain Your HVAC System

Indoor plants can foster and grow mould, which can greatly affect your IAQ. Some plants are said to help improve IAQ because they release oxygen. However, they can sbe allergy triggers for many so they are best kept outside.

Air Out Your Home

Open some windows in your home to allow fresh air to flow throughout the house, even during the cold months. This can help remove contaminants in your home.

If you would like to improve the air you breathe in your home, and need options and suggestions to improve your indoor air quality, then it’s time to bring in the professionals from Triple Tech. We carry a full line of filters, UV lights, full systems and more to improve the IAQ of your home. Give us a call at 705-333-8324 for all your HVAC needs!

Tips for Maintaining Your Air Conditioner

Tips for Maintaining Your Air Conditioner

With many of us spending more time indoors this summer, it is very important to ensure that your air conditioner is running efficiently and effectively. Sometimes a little maintenance and regular upkeep of your air conditioner can go a long way. With that in mind, here are some tips that can help you make sure your air conditioner keeps running smoothly all summer long.

Clean or Replace Filters

Just like your furnace filters, it is a good habit to get into to clean or replace the filters in your air conditioner every three months. This is because a clogged filter means your air conditioner will potentially be working in overdrive, making it less efficient.

Clear the Area Around the Unit

With the condenser unit of the air conditioner being located outside of the home, it is prone to accumulate debris around it. Things like leaves, dirt and even grass clippings can build-up on the unit which can greatly reduce your air conditioner’s capacity by reducing its airflow. This is why it is a good idea to keep an eye on the unit and make sure you keep the area around the unit clean.

Clean the Condenser Coils

With your air conditioner unit sitting outside, and most sitting on the ground, the condenser coils can become dirty. Over time the coils will still collect dirt and debris. This can reduce the airflow into the unit and also insulate the condenser coils which reduces the air conditioner’s ability to reject heat. To avoid this problem, check your condenser coils every year and clean it as necessary.

Fix the Fins

The aluminum fins on condenser coils can be easily bent which can then block the airflow through the coil. You can use a special tool called a fin comb that will comb the fins back into nearly original condition. If you do not have a fin comb, you use a dinner knife and apply gentle pressure to bend them back in place. Be careful not to insert the knife too deep or you could damage the unit.

Unclog the Drain Tube

If you see water pooling around the unit, you might have a clogged drain tube. Condensation from air conditioning coils contains bacteria that can clog the drain tube. It is a good idea to occasionally pass a wire through the unit's drain tube to prevent this from happening.

Preparing for Winter

After the summer season, it is always a good idea to prepare the unit for the winter months. Covering your air conditioner will protect the unit from winter weather and debris and keep it ready to go next summer.

If your air conditioner needs more than just regular maintenance, it’s time to call in the professionals from Triple Tech to help you out. If you’re in the market to purchase a new air conditioning unit, Triple Tech is your factory authorized Bryant dealer with a good selection of in-stock units to finish out the season in cool comfort. Give us a call at 705-333-8324 for all your air conditioning needs!

Summer Plumbing Issues

Summer Plumbing Issues

Outdoor Taps Leaking

Outdoor taps often go unchecked and an undetected leak can put a real strain on your water system and, even worse, do damage your home’s foundation. This is why it is a good idea to test all your taps once you turn the water back on to your outside faucets. If you do find one that is leaking, sometimes it can be as simple to repair as replacing the washer.

Sump Pumps

If you have a basement or crawl space that is prone to flooding, you probably have a sump pump installed to handle the excess water. While you may not think to keep an eye on it during the summer, sometimes unexpected downpours can quickly turn into a flooding situation. It is always a good idea to double-check that your sump pump is in good working order each season to help avoid flooding in your basement.

Sweating Toilets

During the summer, warm and humid weather can cause toilet tanks to sweat. When the tank fills with cold water, the outside of the tank drops in temperature. When the warm summer air hits it, condensation forms on the tank. While it might not seem like a big deal, a constant flow of water can cause damage to the floor or even damage the bolts holding the toilet in place.

One affordable way to fix this problem is to add a layer of insulation inside the tank which will then help prevent the outside tank from getting cold. Another thing to consider is if your flapper is leaking, this would cause cold water to be added to the tank constantly. While a leaking flapper wastes water, it also makes the tank colder. One way to check if your flapper is leaking is to put a few drops of food colouring in the tank. If after some time you see the colouring in the bowl of the toilet, your flapper will need to be replaced.

Clogged Disposals

Summer time is barbecue season! This can lead to an influx of things getting put down your garbage disposal. For example, certain fruits and vegetables are far too tough or fibrous to be ground up properly. This can lead to blade damage and, even worse, cause clogs. A good way to help prevent blockages in your disposal is to let the cold tap run for about ten seconds before and after you use the disposal. Also, avoid putting any used cooking oils or grease down your disposal, as it can congeal when exposed to cold water and form stubborn clogs.

If you have any questions or are in need of an experienced plumber, do not hesitate to call Triple Tech at 705-333-8324. We are on call for you, our community, 24/7 during this pandemic and beyond.

Stay Cool this Summer with Triple Tech

Stay Cool this Summer with Triple Tech

Summer has finally, officially begun! The temperature has finally risen and it appears that this hot weather is here to stay. Restrictions have started to ease, but most of us are still spending more time than usual at home. No matter what, you want to be sure that your home is comfortable throughout the summer heat. If you do not already have an air conditioner in your home or are thinking of an upgrade, now is a perfect time to do so.

There are many different types of cooling systems on the market and it can often be hard to choose the best option for your home. Some popular types of cooling systems include:

Central Cooling Systems produce cool air in one central area and distribute it throughout your home. There are many types of systems that work as central systems, from Traditional Split Systems (having both indoor and outdoor components) to Packaged Product Systems (having one combined outdoor component for heating and cooling).

Ductless Systems are a flexible option that do not require ductwork and are ideal for cooling specific rooms or areas of your home. These systems operate quietly and are available in a variety of designs that can be installed almost anywhere.

Geothermal Systems tap into the Earth’s surface to cool your home, saving energy and money. These systems are quiet and energy-efficient. For renewable energy and rock bottom savings, break ground with geothermal.

Whole-home air conditioning systems are central systems that rely on ductwork to deliver cool air throughout your home. An air conditioning system can provide cooling, ventilation, humidity control and even heating (if using a heat pump).

Still not sure what the best option for your home? The team at Triple Tech can discuss your needs and help you pick out the best option to keep your home cool all summer long. Once you have your air conditioner unit installed, some good tips to follow to allow for your cooling system to operate properly are:

  • Check or change your furnace filter often. Dirty filters will restrict airflow to your evaporator coil and that can cause your air conditioner system to breakdown.

  • Use your garden hose to clean your outdoor condensing unit to allow proper airflow through your outdoor condensing unit. Though, make sure your thermostat is off while performing this cleaning.

During this time, our top priority here at Triple Tech is the health and well-being of our employees, customers and community. In order to continue to be able to provide our services to the community, we are following precautionary measures to minimize any potential risks while still continuing to service our customers. We are still accepting payments by cash or cheque in secure envelopes, as well as e-transfers. We have also implemented a contactless credit card payment system specifically for this time. If you have any questions or concerns, do not hesitate to reach out to Triple Tech at (705) 333-8324 and we would be more than happy to help.

Making Your Home Comfortable While Sheltering in Place

Making Your Home Comfortable While Sheltering in Place

Mother Nature has finally decided to get back on track and give us some more seasonal weather. With most of us spending more time than usual at home, and with summer right around the corner, you want to be sure that your home is safe and comfortable. Triple Tech is here to help with all your air conditioning and electrical needs!

Air Conditioning

While many people believe that spending too much time in an air-conditioned environment can make you sick, this is just not true. Colds and the common flu are caused by viruses, not cooler temperatures. However, if your air conditioning unit is dirty, you could be subjecting yourself and your family to a variety of different bacteria, fungi, mould, and mildew. Before you fire up the A/C unit for the season, book your maintenance and cleaning appointments with Triple Tech. Our highly trained team will make sure your air conditioner will run smoothly all season long.

It is going to be a long, hot summer. If you do not already have an air conditioner in your home or are thinking of an upgrade, now is a perfect time. Our team can help you pick out and install the best option to keep your cool this summer.

Electrical Department

Did you know that Triple Tech also has a full-service electrical department? With our province slowly beginning to open up for business again, the electrical department will be busy with both residential and commercial jobs. Whether you need renovations to your workplace to help support physical distancing for your employees (this could range from things like new lighting, adding more outlets, etc.) or some renovations at home (to create an office space, to adding more outlets for patios and hot tubs), our professional, experienced team is here to help.

Enhanced Safety Measures

Our top priority here at Triple Tech is the health and well-being of our employees, customers and community. We recognize that while the province is slowly opening up our customers will have plumbing, heating and electrical services needs during this time. In order to continue to be able to provide these services, we are following precautionary measures to minimize any potential risks while still continuing to service our customers. Some of the precautionary measures we are following are:

  • To help keep our technicians and customers safe we will be wearing face masks and practicing hand hygiene or wearing gloves, when appropriate
  • Our technicians have all been given cleaning products to use on job sites as they see fit.

Do not hesitate to reach out to Triple Tech at (705) 333-8324 with any questions or concerns. Don’t forget that we are available 24/7 for emergency calls.

Etiquette for a Home Service Call During COVID-19

Etiquette for a Home Service Call During COVID-19

With the recent COVID-19 pandemic, our top priority here at Triple Tech is the health and well-being of our employees, customers and community. We recognize that our local community members will still need emergency plumbing, heating and electrical services during this time. In order to continue to be able to provide these services, we are following precautionary measures to minimize any potential risk while being able to continue servicing our customers.

Some of the precautionary measures we are following are:

  • To help keep our technicians and customers safe we will be wearing face masks and using cleaning products. We will also avoid shaking hands at this time.

  • Our technicians have all been given cleaning products to use on job sites as needed.

There are also things that you can do before, during, and after the service call that can help protect yourself as well as the technician.

Mark a Clear Path

It is a good idea to plan a path for the technician to use through your home, as well as picking out a spot for them to put their tools. If possible, remove anything that might be in the technician’s way. This will help ensure that they touch fewer things and spends less time in your home.

Prepare the Work Area

To help protect the technician, you can clean the area where they will be working before they arrive. This helps protect them in the event the virus is in your home (even if you’re not aware of it).

You can also put out disposable paper or plastic, or a washable sheet on which the worker can walk as well as place their tools upon. This will help reduce the number of surfaces the technician would be in contact with.

Stand 2 Meters Back

Continue to follow physical distancing by keeping 2 meters away from the technician at all times. This will help minimize both party’s exposure to one another during the service call.

Protect your Hands

If you have to hand something to the worker, use gloves or something like a paper towel to cover the item when you pass it. Then wash your hands vigorously, for good measure. If you must sign something, use your own pen or stylus (for touch screens).

Cleaning Up

After the technician has completed the job, wash your hands again - you can never do this too much! Then remove any coverings you put on the floor and dispose of them or put them in the washer. Then clean a six-foot area around the path the technician used.

Payment Options

Triple Tech still has a variety of payment options available to keep you and our staff safe.

We are still accepting cash and cheques in secure envelopes, as well as e-transfers. We have also implemented a contactless credit card payment system specifically for this time. If you have any questions about invoicing or payment methods, we would be happy to further explain.

If you have any further questions, do not hesitate to call Triple Tech at 705-333-8324. We are on call for you, our community, 24/7 during this pandemic and beyond.

What You Need to Know About Hot Water Heaters

What You Need to Know About Hot Water Heaters

The cost of heating water can take up almost 20 percent of your household budget, second only to the costs of heating and cooling your home! Despite this expense, water heaters are typically ignored until something goes wrong with them.

Types of Water Heaters

Depending on how much hot water you use and how you’re heating the water (gas or electric), there are different choices to choose from.

Storage Tank Water Heaters

Storage tanks are the most common type of water heater. These consist of an insulated tank in which water is heated and stored until needed. Natural gas water heaters typically use less energy and cost less to run than electric water heaters, although you should note that gas models can cost more at the time of purchase.

Tankless Water Heater

Rather than storing water, tankless water heaters use heating coils to heat the water as it is needed. Because these systems function on an on-demand basis, they do not require a holding tank to store pre-warmed water. No storage or holding reserve means that tankless water heaters have a life span that's twice as long as traditional systems because the risk of rust and corrosion is significantly lowered. As well, in some cases, you can save up to 75% of traditional water heaters. If your home or cottage has hard water, you will need to consider the effects of mineral deposits on the heat exchanger.

As well, a tankless water heater is able to precisely control the temperature of the water, which means temperature drops and spikes in the shower are far less likely to happen. There's nothing worse than a sudden, unexpected temperature spike in the shower!

Heat Pump (Hybrid) Water Heater

These water heaters capture heat from the air and transfer it to the water. They use about 60 percent less energy than standard electric water heaters. And while they cost more than electric-only models, installation is similar and payback time is short. But they don’t work well in very cold spaces and need to be placed in an area that stays about 40° F to 90° F.

Condensing Water Heater

Condensing water heaters are an option if you heat with gas and need a unit with a capacity of more than 55 gallons. These models have a tank like a conventional water heater, but they capture exhaust gases that would normally go out the flue, which wastes energy. These gases are blown through a coil in the base of the unit, where incoming cold water can absorb most of the heat.

Hot Water Safety

Another thing to think about is how hot your water heater is set at. While turning the temperature down on your water heater could save you money, something to consider is Legionella. Legionella are bacteria that live in water that can cause two types of illness in humans: Legionnaires’ disease and Pontiac fever.

Legionella bacteria are found in natural water sources such as lakes, rivers, ponds, and streams generally at levels that are too low to cause disease in people. Cases of Legionnaires’ disease have occurred in many different settings, including homes, commercial buildings, spas, cruise ships and health care facilities.

In your home, you can reduce the risks through proper maintenance of all mist-producing devices, such as showerheads, hot tubs, whirlpool bathtubs, and humidifiers. Make sure you clean and disinfect these devices regularly according to manufacturer directions. Keeping your home water heater at a suitable temperature (a minimum of 60°C) will also help prevent the growth of Legionella. However, to reduce the risk of scalding, it is important that the temperature of the water be no higher than 49°C at the tap. We can help you to install mixing valves to control the tap water temperature.

Triple Tech is a Bryant Factory Authorized Dealer, and we'd be happy to fill you in on all of the benefits of different types of water heaters, whether you're looking to free up space at home or keep your cottage running efficiently. Triple Tech proudly serves the communities in and around Midland and Penetanguishene. We go as far east as Orillia, west to Wasaga Beach, as far south as Innisfil and North all the way up to Parry Sound. Give us a call at 705-333-8324 today.

Reducing Energy Costs this Winter

Reducing Energy Costs this Winter

Winter in our neck of the woods can be harsh and keeping your heating costs under control can become a real challenge. To help, we have put together some tips and tricks to help you stay warm without breaking the bank.

Set your Thermostat Lower

Lowering the thermostat by even just a couple of degrees can help save money right off the bat. If you feel chilly, instead of raising the thermostat, bundle up and put on a sweater with some warm socks or slippers. You can also buy a programmable thermostat to automatically adjust your temperature for day and night. Without even having to think about it, the thermostat can turn down the heat in an unused room when you are sleeping or when you are not at home. This alone can save you upwards of 15% on your heating bill!

Use Fans

Ceiling fans have two directions, one to draw air up and one to push air down. Using them to circulate the warm air will help eliminate cold spots in the home. You can also use oscillating fans to help move the air around.

Keep Vents and Heaters Clear

Make sure your air registers aren’t covered by furniture or rugs and keep radiators clear and open. Heat travels further if it doesn’t have to go around obstacles.

Seal Leaks

The most common areas that heat loss occurs are around windows, doors, electrical sockets, baseboards, and attics. Sealing any leaks can help save you at least 10-20% on your heating bill. Seal the gaps with caulk or weather stripping. The major culprit for heat loss is your windows. You can buy a window covering kit at your local hardware or dollar store and cover the windows to keep drafts out.

Close your Curtains

Closing curtains and blinds at night can help insulate your home when temperatures are generally at their coldest. If you have any uncovered windows, hanging a blanket over the window at night will help.

Let the Sun In

During the day, let the sunshine in. If you have your windows covered in plastic to keep drafts out, letting the sunshine in it can raise the temperature of a room by at least 2 degrees or more.

Check Your Filters

If you have forced air, check the filters on your furnace to make sure they are clean and at peak performance. The general rule for changing your furnace filter is every 3 months. If you have pets or smoke inside the house, you will need to check and change your furnace filters more often.

Proper Maintenance

Lastly, be sure to have your heating systems checked regularly. With proper service and maintenance, your heating systems will function at optimum efficiency. If you have any further questions, do not hesitate to call Triple Tech at 705-333-8324 and see how we can help you save today!

Health Benefits of Humidifiers

Health Benefits of Humidifiers

Did you know that the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CHMC) recommends that your home maintain a humidity level anywhere between 40 and 60 percent? During extremely cold weather, your home loses humidity to the outdoors and these levels may drop as low as 10 percent. This just goes to show that during these cool months the air in your home can be as dry as the Sahara Desert! This is where using a humidifier to put moisture back into the air can benefit you and your family.

Here are some of the health benefits of using a humidifier during the winter:

  • Reduce Risk of Infections - Viruses and bacteria can’t travel as well in moist air. A 2013 study showed that increasing humidity levels to 43 percent or above significantly reduced the ability of airborne viruses to cause flu infections. In fact, in a low humidity environment, 70-77 percent of viruses could transmit the disease through coughs, but when the humidity was increased to 43 percent or more, that number dropped to only 14 percent.

  • Faster healing times - A humidifier can shorten your suffering by keeping your nasal passages and your throat moist. This can help you heal faster, and will reduce symptoms like coughing and sneezing.

  • Softer, more vibrant skin - Cold, dry air saps moisture from your skin, which causes all kinds of problems, including dryness, dullness, flaking, and accelerated ageing. A humidifier can help prevent all these damaging effects.

Dry air can also cause problems for your home. Here are some benefits to having proper humidity in your home:

  • Healthier Houseplants - Plants can help pull toxins out of the air. But they can suffer in the dry, winter air. If you have you noticed that the soil is dryer than usual or the leaves looking droopy and sick, a humidifier can help keep your houseplants healthy—which helps keep you healthy, too!

  • Protected Wood Furnishings - Dry air can damage wood furniture causing them to split and crack. A humidifier can help preserve the integrity of the wood, maintaining your pieces for years to come.

  • Reduced Heating Bill - Did you know that moist air feels warmer than dry air? If you add some moisture to the air, it will feel warmer, which can help you save on your heating bills this winter.

While humidifiers are great for you for a number of reasons, they do need to be cleaned regularly. Otherwise, they can become a source of bacteria and mould, which you don’t want floating around your home.

Here are some tips to help keep your humidifier clean:

  • Use Distilled or Demineralized Water - Regular tap water has minerals that create buildup in your machine and can promote bacterial growth. Distilled and demineralized water contains fewer minerals and will save you from having to clean as often.

  • Routinely Clean - If you make this a regular part of your cleaning routine, you’ll be able to get it done quickly and will keep your home healthy.

  • Change Filters Regularly - If your humidifier has a filter, follow the manufacturer’s directions for changing it.

It should also be noted that too much humidity can be just as problematic as not enough. Too much humidity can cause mould. To keep your home at the ideal level, use a “hygrometer” (you can find one at home improvement and electronics stores) to measure the humidity in your home.

If you have any further questions, don’t hesitate to call Triple Tech to learn how our advanced whole-house humidifiers can improve your air quality and comfort for your home. 705-333-8324.

Keeping Your Outside Exhaust Vents Clear of Snow

Keeping Your Outside Exhaust Vents Clear of Snow

The snow is piling up. You keep your walkways and driveway clear, but where are you throwing all that wonderful white stuff? Any snow that accumulates in areas around your house should be something you pay attention to, especially around your HVAC vents or the intake/exhaust pipe of your furnace or water heater. If these become blocked, it can cause serious damage and serious health issues inside your home.

Most homes these days have a gas furnace, which requires combustion to work. The byproduct of the combustion process requires venting outside of the dwelling. Gas water heaters operate on a similar process. Snow piling up against your home can block these extremely important vent airways and have a long list of negative effects.

  • Intakes and vents become inoperable
  • Excessive wear and tear on your furnace or water heater
  • A build-up of carbon monoxide and other dangerous gases within the home
  • The system may shut off or stall
  • A “snow cave” effect may occur, forcing all the gases expelled from the house to be drawn back in

High-efficiency furnaces need to pull fresh air from the outside for combustion. You will need to make sure these pipes aren’t blocked as well. These vents are supposed to be installed above the snow line, but falling snow from roofs, drifting snow, and the clearing of driveways and walkways can cause snow to pile up in the areas where the pipes are. Even if you are vigilant about keeping snow accumulation away from them, your neighbours may not be aware of where your pipes are and cover them accidentally.

There are a few things you can do on your own to prevent this from happening. Talk to your neighbours about where each of you can deposit your snow, especially if you have a driveway that is shared or between your two houses. This prevents either of you from covering the vents. Check the pipes on a regular basis and hand shovel any snow away from them. Be sure to always check on them after a heavy snowfall or high winds. Just as roads can quickly develop snowdrifts, so can the areas around your house. Also, check after a warm day when the snow has been melting and falling off the roof. This can cause a large amount of snow to pile up very quickly. You can also build an A-frame shelter over the vents to protect them, which will direct the snow away.

Snow and cold air can make your furnace cycle more than usual, putting wear and tear on your system and increasing your heating bills. The Triple Tech team can give you advice on preventative care for your furnace and water heater, even if snow is involved. If you have been experiencing problems when it snows, we can help you figure out how to prevent snow buildup in the future. Give us a call today at 705-333-8324.

Team Triple Tech Gives Back to Camp Kitchi

Team Triple Tech Gives Back to Camp Kitchi

Situated on Beausoleil Island in gorgeous Georgian Bay, Camp Kitchikewana has been welcoming campers from all over since 1919. Owned and operated by the YMCA of Simcoe/Muskoka, Camp Kitchi is graciously supported by a variety of service groups including the Midland Y’s Men’s Club, the Midland, Penetanguishene & District Builders’ Association (MPDBA) and Team Triple Tech!

For 100 years, Camp Kitchikewana has provided each member of the camp community with the opportunity to be active, to learn and to grow in a safe, healthy and natural environment. That’s why we are so happy to be able to give back!

Each year, members of the MPDBA visit Camp Kitchi to assess the repair and maintenance needs on various buildings, structures, and features. The members then assemble a team of skilled tradespeople and volunteers to give their time and materials to complete these needed projects - and that’s where the fun begins!

Team Triple Tech was happy to head over to Camp Kitch for our second year of fun and hard work with other likeminded local volunteers. From Friday to Sunday, we worked and played to benefit campers for years more to come.

With our expertise and experience in plumbing, Team Triple Tech was assigned the task of revamping the outdoor wash station. We were happy to join forces with Bryte Custom Contracting to complete this fun and unique project!

We kept with the theme, history, and spirit of Camp Kitchi and decided to repurpose an unused fiberglass canoe as the washbasin/sink. Bradley and Ryan from Bryte Custom Contracting reframed the structure of the wash station to accommodate the canoe while Triple Tech’s own Darrell and Dave planned and installed all of the new plumbing fixtures. Check out the pictures below of the team at work and the finished project!

Is Geothermal Heating and Cooling Right for My Home or Business?

Is Geothermal Heating and Cooling Right for My Home or Business?

With the definite need to seek out renewable energy sources, more and more people are considering Geothermal systems to heat and cool their home. Let’s take a look at the basics of geothermal heating and cooling to determine if it is the right fit for your home and/or business.

How Does It Work?

Geothermal energy is everywhere and literally right beneath our feet! Geothermal HVAC systems use energy extracted from the Earth to dependably distribute heating and cooling, as the energy extracted remains at a constant temperature throughout the year, no matter what the weather above ground may be.

A geothermal heat pump transfers heat from the ground to your home, cottage or business through long loops of underground pipes filled with liquid, either water or an antifreeze solution. The loops are hooked up to a geothermal heat pump in your home, which acts as both a furnace and an air conditioner.

During the heating season, the liquid pulls heat from the ground and delivers it to the geothermal heating and cooling unit and then to refrigerant coils, where the heat is distributed through a forced-air or hydronic system. During the cooling season, the process runs in reverse. The pump removes heat from your house and transfers it to the earth. Many units can provide domestic hot water as well.

Efficiency

Geothermal energy is MUCH more efficient than conventional heating systems because it doesn’t burn fuel to create warmth; it simply moves existing heat from one place to another. Geothermal systems provide heating and cooling more evenly than conventional equipment resulting in a significant increase in home comfort.

Cost

75% of geothermal energy is free! The initial investment to install a geothermal system will vary based on a variety of factors but most users will see a payback of capital costs in less than 5 years. The price varies depending on the type of loop system installed, the equipment used and the cost of skilled labour. Since more work is required to install geothermal systems, this also changes the initial install cost. Installing a geothermal system is DEFINITELY NOT a DIY project!

Benefits

Geothermal systems have a much longer life cycle than conventional HVAC systems. Traditional HVAC equipment has a life expectancy of 15-20 years. Geothermal systems have a longer life cycle: 25 years for the mechanical equipment and 50-plus years for the in-ground loop.

Geothermal energy is considered renewable with no fossil fuels used. The water that is removed is put right back into the ground after its heat is used. With a geothermal heat pump, there’s no onsite combustion and therefore no emissions of carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide or other greenhouse gases. Nor are there any combustion-related safety or air quality issues inside the house.

Triple Tech’s Guide To Keeping Cool

Triple Tech’s Guide To Keeping Cool:
A Look at Your A/C Options

Summer is here in full force, and with the temperatures to prove it! If you’re dripping with sweat from a day in the sun, only to come home and find that it’s somehow even hotter inside, perhaps it’s time to finally get some nice, cool air going through the house. The big question is: What type of air conditioning is right for me?

Triple Tech is going to take a look at three different options to help you make the right decision for keeping you cool through the summer.

Window Air Conditioner

The window a/c unit is the tried and true method for apartments and small houses. These popular little guys sit snugly in the window, sending all the hot air in the room outside and exchanging it for cold air. A small unit can often cool anywhere from 100-350 square feet, and strategic planning can even cool more than one room. While handy, the window units certainly do pose a few risks. Installing a window A/C unit involves decreasing the security of your home, as it takes up the spot of your window and can easily be removed. You also want to be sure that the dripping water of the units isn’t going to be a nuisance to those walking or living underneath. Also, not all windows are able to support an air conditioner, so be sure to check with us first!

Portable Air Conditioner

Portable A/C units don’t take up a whole window pane but still require some space to run th exhaust line outside. Portable units are far easier to move around the house as needed however, they are far less energy efficient than window units. The fact that the whole unit and all the working parts are sitting right there inside the house means that portable units can get far louder than window-mounted units. These portable units are ideal for those living in apartments or condos with strict rules on installing anything to the exterior of your home, like a window unit. They’re also a great alternative if your windows are incapable of holding a window unit, or if they’re just too high to be effective.

Central Air

Ah, central air, the “Holy Grail” when it comes to summertime. Everyone loves walking in the front door and feeling that cool, refreshing air while walking to the kitchen, upstairs, the bathroom, anywhere in the house. But,cooling each and every room in your house can lead to high energy bills and quickly. The benefits of clean, filtered air throughout your home is a large draw for many people but central air does require ductwork, which some older homes and cottages do not have.

If you want to keep cool this Summer, Triple Tech is here to help answer any and all questions you might have! There’s a way to chill out for everyone and every type of home. Give us a call today at 705-333-8324.

Triple Tech's Guide To Tankless Water Heater

Triple Tech's Guide To Tankless Water Heater

Tired of cold showers at home or the cottage? It might be time to go tankless! Tankless water heaters are capable of providing an instant, endless supply of hot water. Because these systems function on an on-demand basis, they don't require a holding tank to store pre-warmed water. So, whether you have a cottage full of guests or a teen who takes their sweet, sweet time in the shower, there will never be any worry about running out of hot water! Tankless water heaters have come a long way in their hundred-year history. Let's take a look at the advantages to these compact water heaters.

Tankless water heaters are water heaters that instantly heat water as it flows through the device. They do not retain any water internally except for what is in the heat exchanger coil. Copper heat exchangers are preferred in these units because of their high thermal conductivity and ease of fabrication.

Advantage: They're small

Tankless water heaters are great for those in small residences or who don't have much room at the cottage. With an average size of 28 x 20 x 10 inches, they are easy to install and don't require an entire closet or large section of square footage dedicated to heating your water. Free up your closet or use the extra basement space for much-needed storage space!

Advantage: The long-run savings

If the small, compact style of tankless water heaters isn't your favourite feature, it's got to be the long term savings. Saving an average of $100/year, these energy efficient water heaters offer you as much hot water as you need, only when you need it, opposed to having a huge tank of water always being heated.

Advantage: Safety

A tankless water heater is able to precisely control the temperature of the water, which means temperature drops and spikes in the shower are far less likely to happen. There's nothing worse than a sudden, unexpected temperature spike in the shower!

Triple Tech is a Bryant Factory Authorized Dealer, and we'd be happy to fill you in on all of the benefits of installing a tankless water heater, whether you're looking to free up space at home or keep your cottage running efficiently. Triple Tech proudly serves the communities in and around Midland and Penetanguishene. We go as far east as Orillia, wet to Wasaga Beach, as far south as Innisfil and North all the way up to Parry Sound. Give us a call at 705-333-8324 today.

Top Reasons Why Tradespeople Will Always Be In Demand

Top Reasons Why Tradespeople Will Always Be In Demand

When your pipes begin to leak or your deck starts to sink, is it a robot you call to come and fix the problems? Of course not! Despite the move towards automation for so many different kinds of work and services, a trusted, practiced pair of hands will always be needed in the Trades. Let’s take a brief look as to why trades work isn’t just a passing career choice, but a booming one filled with opportunities.

It Appears To Be A “Dying Art”:

The generational gap between baby boomers and current students is a very wide one. While baby boomers are hanging up their tool belts for retirement in record numbers, more and more students are choosing more technological based careers like programming instead of classes like wood shop and auto tech, leaving potential employers starved for handy talent.

Someone’s Gotta Do It:

There are just some jobs that can not be done by robots. Each and every job is different; whether it’s in a workshop, a garage, at a home or even building a home from scratch. It’s manual labour and teamwork at its core.

Keeping It In The Community:

Something most people tend to overlook when hiring a tradesperson is the positive effect it has on the local economy and the local community. The money spent on a plumber goes directly back to a business close to you, opposed to sending the work offshore. The money spent on a new roof goes to the paycheque of our friends and neighbours instead of a faceless corporation. Hiring local tradespeople to do the work is one of the easiest ways to support your local businesses!

There Are Circles Of Trust:

The greatest asset of working with people directly on something you need to be built or fixed is that there isn’t just trust in the person you got to do the job, but the recommendation of other tradespeople, tools, and products for the job comes from a genuine place. Tradespeople take their tools and their craft seriously, including us at TripleTech. Being a Factory Authorized Dealer of Bryant Heating and Cooling Systems means we do Whatever It Takes, day in and day out to provide you with solutions, installations and services to satisfy you.

There’s Way More Trades Jobs Than You Think:

When most people hear the word “trades”, they think “electrician, plumber, carpenter” but never seem to list amazing jobs like a wind-turbine technician, an aircraft mechanic or a pile-driver operator! There’s so much more than the few staples, and there are some incredibly interesting trades work most people didn’t even realize were jobs!

The demand for skilled trades workers is higher than ever. As the population swells and the baby boomers retire, there is a need for people to build and repair nearly everything that makes our world run as smoothly as it does already. If we begin to see a heavy loss of trades workers, what could it mean for when we require their assistance?

Tips for Staying Cool Without A/C

Tips for Staying Cool Without A/C

So far the summer of 2018 has been a HOT one with record-breaking temperatures and not much relief, even in the evenings. Oh sure, it’s not that bad when you're inside with your A/C cranked, but what happens if it decides to stop working and you can’t get a technician out to investigate the problem for a few days? For many of us, sleeping without our beloved air conditioning is a nightmare! There is nothing worse than not being able to get a good night’s sleep because you're tossing, turning and sticking to your sheets from sweating so much. Have no fear! We have come up with these helpful tips and tricks that will have you on your way to dreamland while feeling cooler and more comfortable.

  • A good place to start is by using light coloured cotton sheets instead of silk, polyester or satin. Cotton is a breathable fabric that allows better airflow and ventilation for your body and your bedroom.
  • Chill out by having a cool shower or bath right before bed. This will help bring your body temperature down.
  • Your freezer is your best friend! No, we aren’t telling you to go jump in that big chest freezer in the basement but there are a few tricks. Try placing your bed sheets in a plastic bag and put them in your freezer a little bit before you are ready for bed. Ice packs strategically placed on well know pulse points (wrist, neck, elbows, ankles and behind the knees) are another great option.
  • It is a well-known fact that heat rises, so head for the lowest place possible in your home.
  • There are a couple of different ways that using a fan or multiple fans can be to your advantage. Place a large bucket or bowl full of ice in front of your fan and allow the fan to push around the cooler air generated by the ice. You can also set up 2 fans so they are creating a cross breeze (one sucking the hot air out and one circulating the air in your room).
  • Ancient Egyptians have proven that taking a large bath towel or sheet, soaking it in cool water and wrapping yourself in it as an effective cooling method. Be sure you wring out all the excess water from the towel or sheet so you aren't left with a soaking wet mattress.

The above tips may seem a little unconventional but they may be just what you need to get you through until your A/C is functioning again. A few other things that you can do to prevent the temperature from rising in your home is to close all blinds and curtains during the day when the sun is shining brightly, avoid using the stove or oven to cook as they generate heat and unplug all TV’s and computers, as they still give off some heat even when they are not turned on.

Tips & Tricks to Keep Warm if your Furnace Stops Working

Tips & Tricks to Keep Warm if your Furnace Stops Working

If it’s not much warmer inside your house than outside, you’ve got a problem. It always seems to be the at most inopportune time when your furnace goes on the fritz, usually smack dab in the middle of a cold spell because your furnace is working overtime.
Do you know how to keep warm until a repairman can come to check it out? Here is a list of ideas that will help should you ever find yourself in this chilly situation.
  • Get Cooking! Using your stove and oven to make a delicious meal or some tasty treats will generate heat to help warm up your home. You can easily turn this into a fun family baking challenge by getting the kids involved, and the best part is all the taste testing that will need to be done when everything is ready! ***Warning, using an oven as a heat source only can lead to dangerous levels of carbon monoxide in the home.

  •  Snuggle up! Grab a couple of warm cozy blankets, throw on a few layers of clothing and head for the couch for a Netflix binge. It is important to add layers of clothing such as socks, long johns, and sweaters. You don’t want your body temperature to drop as it won’t be easy to get it back up without any heat.

  • Keep Moving. There are so many options available for this idea, it can be anything to exercising, doing some house cleaning to cranking the radio and busting out your best dance moves.

  • Warm your tummy. Make yourself a nice warm bowl of soup or a cup of coffee, tea, or hot chocolate! If you’re feeling cold or even have a cold, a Hot Toddy is a great way to take the chill off….. so I’ve been told ??

  • Seal up those windows and doors. Pick a small room in the house to hunker down in. Close the door and put towels or blankets along window ledges and door frames to help prevent any cold air coming in. You’ll be surprised how warm the room will stay.

  • Light some Candles. Once you’ve hunkered down, light some candles. The flame from the candle will produce heat. Keep safety in mind when it comes to an open flame; never leave them unattended or put them near anything flammable and keep out of reach of children.

  • Space Heaters. It is always a good idea to be prepared, so having a space heater on hand that can be used in desperate situations can come in handy. Be sure that you read all of the manufactures suggestions and safety tips before using it.
If your furnace breaks down during an Ontario winter deep freeze, your local heating specialists will do their best to get to you quickly, however, there are quite often many other households without heat, so it may take some time for them to get to you. Please implement these tips as soon as you realize there’s an issue to keep yourself warm.

Family Fun Around Your Fireplace

Family Fun Around Your Fireplace

Tis the season for snow, snow and more snow!  Are you like so many others and don’t always enjoy freezing your fingers to the bone just to spend some quality time with the family?  Well don’t fret, we’ve come up with some fun indoor activities around your cozy fireplace that will not only bring you hours of entertaining family time together but will keep you toasty and warm.

Games Day

Snuggle into some cozy pajamas and break out the board games around the fireplace.  Make a full day or evening of it!  There are so many different board games out there these days designed for kids of all ages.  For families with younger ones break out some of the classics like Candyland, Hungry Hungry Hipo or Snakes, and Ladders.  If your kids are a little older your options are endless: Monopoly, Operation or Twister.  One of the more popular games that have come out recently is Speak Out, a ridiculous mouthpiece challenge game - you have to see this to believe it, they even have a Kids versus Parent addition.  Whatever games you choose to have fun, laugh and get silly!

Movie Night

Everyone enjoys snuggles and movies, but let’s take it up a notch!  How about a theme movie night?  Pick a movie or two and really go all out.  What little girl doesn’t like to dress up like her favorite Disney character?  Let’s take Beauty and the Beast as an example; dress your princess in her Belle costume, mom or dad can be the beast and dance and sing along with the music.  For your little man, there’s always Toy Story!  How fun will it be pretending you’re Buzz Lightyear and Woody?  If dress up is not quite your style plan a theme night around your movie.  Make a dinner based on your movie of choice or create your own concession stand, the possibilities are endless and Pinterest can be a very helpful tool for your planning.

Camping

Who doesn’t love camping-indoors?  Whether you go full out pitching a tent by the fireplace or building a blanket fort to sleep in, the kids will love it.  String up some mini lights on the ceiling to act as your stars, and bring out your favorite camp side goodies. Roasting hotdogs and marshmallows are ABSOLUTELY not recommended over your gas fireplace but there are ways to get around that.  Make pigs in a blanket on a stick or smores in your oven.

Telling stories or singing campfire songs is another good idea.  Make the experience as real as possible.
With the holidays just around the corner, we all know how busy and stressful it can get but take a day or two and make memories for this season that the kids will never forget.

Safety Tips for your Fireplace

Safety Tips for your Fireplace

Who doesn’t enjoy curling up in front of a nice toasty warm fireplace? The season is here when most of us like to light a cozy fire to heat our homes, but there are a few important safety factors that you need to keep in mind to prevent any fireplace mishaps.

  • Ensure that you are using a screen to prevent any embers from popping out of the fire onto carpets or furniture surrounding your fireplace.

  • Clear away any paper, wood or other highly flammable materials. Storing such objects too close to the fireplace increases the risk of these items igniting and starting a potentially bad situation.

  • NEVER use fluids or fuel to start your indoor fire. There are many different alternatives to use to start your fire.

  • Always open the damper before starting your fire and make sure it stays open until all the ashes have cooled. Keeping the damper open will prevent smoke build up in your home.

  • Regularly clean & service your fireplace. You want to make sure you are removing old ashes (depending on how much you use your fireplace), to prevent a build-up. Keeping an old metal bucket in close proximity is a good idea so you can easily make a habit of scooping the ashes each time you start a fire. It is also important to have a professional in once a year to clean and inspect your chimney to prevent a build-up of tar and debris.

  • Have a smoke and carbon monoxide detector mounted in the same room as your fireplace?

  • Keep a fire extinguisher in close reach in case your fire should ever get out of hand.

  • Beware of which wood and materials you burn in your fireplace Only used seasoned, dried wood. Be sure never to burn any plastics or other materials, including wrapping paper, that can give off potentially dangerous fumes. It is recommended that only wood or manufactured logs be used in your fire.

  • DON’T EVER leave your fire unattended. It only takes a few seconds for a fire to get out of control and engulf your room and home.

  • If you are installing a new fireplace make sure to follow the manufacturer’s guidelines and tips that are included with most units.

When it comes to having a fireplace in your home, make Safety your number 1 priority. Next, grab some warm cocoa and cookies, sit back and enjoy the crackling sounds and soothing aromas that come with having a fire.

Carbon Monoxide Detectors

Carbon Monoxide Detectors

The silent killer, Carbon Monoxide! Odorless, colourless and tasteless, so you never know it is present. Having a Carbon Monoxide detector is imperative and in most homes required by law; it could save you and your family’s lives.

WHAT DO CARBON MONOXIDE DETECTORS ACTUALLY DO?

Although there are different kinds of detectors that operate with different sensor systems they all do the same thing. If Carbon Monoxide is present in the air over time, an alarm will be sounded from your device.

WHAT TO DO IF THE ALARM GOES OFF

First off don’t panic! If your carbon monoxide detector is sounding its alarm, calmly get everyone outside into the fresh air. Evaluate if anyone is having any flu-like symptoms or not feeling well and if so call 911 or your emergency services. If before exiting your house you are able to open all windows and doors safely, do so. DO NOT go back into your residence until the alarm has stopped going off or you are given the all clear by authorities. It is strongly advised that you contact a professional to have your home inspected to see what caused your carbon monoxide detector to go off. They will check all your fuel-burning appliances and other devices that may have triggered the alarm.

WHERE DO I PUT MY DETECTOR AND WHAT DIFFERENT KINDS ARE THERE?

Deciding on what kind of Carbon Monoxide detector to purchase all depends on your needs. You have 2 options; battery operated which can be put in a location of your choice or electric which will need to be placed close to an outlet so they can be plugged in. Keep in mind if you choose the electric detector if the power goes out the model you have chosen should have a battery back-up. If battery operated is the way you are going, be sure to change your batteries at least once a year. A good rule of thumb to follow for the location of your detectors is to have one on every floor of your house and to test them regularly as you would with your smoke detectors.

WHAT IS THE LIFESPAN OF CARBON MONOXIDE DETECTORS

Typically as with most things, carbon monoxide detectors have a life span and after time will lose their effectiveness. For that reason, it is recommended that you replace your units every 5-7 years or as recommended by the manufacturer.

If you don’t already have carbon monoxide detectors in your home put them on your list for the next time you make a visit to your local hardware store where they can be easily purchased with pricing starting at roughly $30.00 and up. Keep your family and home safe from this poisonous gas.

Preparing your Furnace for Winter

Preparing your Furnace for Winter

With summer (if that’s what we want to call it this year) coming to an end, we all know what is right around the corner. Cold winds, snow, and cranking on our furnace. Don’t wait until the first frost comes to find out you have a problem. Get ahead of the game and check out that furnace before you actually need it.

If you are a hands-on, do-it-yourself kind of person, here are a few things to check and test to make sure your furnace is in tip-top shape for that first cold spell.

  • Replace your filter. This point can’t be stressed enough. Your furnace filter collects dust and debris and can easily get clogged causing reduced air flow throughout your home.

  • Clean the surrounding area. Take some time to move anything that may have piled up over the summer away from the furnace and ensure that the space around your furnace is clean.

  • Get out the vacuum. Make sure the power is off first. Then, take your vacuum and remove the cover of your furnace and suck out any dirt and dust that may have built up around the burners.

  • Check your vents. Go over all the vents making sure they are all open to ensure airflow is reaching each room of your home.

  • Moving on to the motor. Again, be sure that the power is off first. Seeing as the motor is a moving part it is a good idea to oil all oil able motors. This will keep all the parts operating smoothly and also gives you a chance to see if there is any rust or evidence of anything being broken.

  • Thermostat time. If your thermostat requires batteries, now is the time to change them. Turn on the thermostat to see if it is in good working order. You should here your furnace kick on almost immediately after flipping the switch.

Know when to call the professionals!

Even though you’ve been doing your seasonal preparation, it is recommended that a technician pay you a visit at least every other year to provide a thorough inspection of all safeties and gas pressures to ensure proper operation, maximum lifespan, and greatest efficiency. Not everyone has the time to dedicate to getting their unit up to par for the winter months, but if you decide to give it a whirl on your own and find at any point the job has become too much for you to handle, don’t hesitate to make that call to someone who has the experience and knowledge to finish the job.

Troubleshooting Your A/C Problems

Troubleshooting Your A/C Problems

We are in the middle of a heat wave Georgian Bay and “OH NO”, your central air stopped working! We have all been here before and no one likes being sticky and sweaty when trying to sleep at night. Don’t panic, here are some helpful tips for two common problems to get your air conditioning back up and working so you can be as cool as a cucumber again!

My A/C won’t turn on

There are a few different things to check if you find yourself in this situation.

  1. Start at your main electrical panel to make sure the breaker hasn’t tripped or a fuse isn’t blown. If this is the reason, reset your breaker or replace your fuse. Should your breaker continue to trip or fuse to blown there is a good indication that there is a short in the system. At this point bringing an electrician or repairman in would be a good idea.

  2. Check to ensure your thermostat is set to cool and is set below the room’s temperature.

  3. Is the power on? There are a few different places you need to look at, the switch in the furnace or air handler, the outdoor condenser, and the compressor’s 240-volt disconnect box.

  4. Confirm that your thermostat is not faulty. If your thermostat is run on batteries, change those. If that doesn’t work you will have to dig deeper by testing the wiring inside the thermostat. Many helpful videos can be found online with step by step instructions for this. If you aren’t comfortable doing this be sure to call for help.

My A/C isn’t blowing cold air

  1. Is your filter clean? If the filter in your furnace is clogged with debris and excess dust this will certainly slow and even stop the air from circulating. Changing your filter on a monthly basis can help prevent this problem.

  2. Have a look at the outdoor unit. Sometimes you’ll find that grass, twigs or dirt have built up around your unit. Be sure to clear away all unwanted items that may be blocking the way.

  3. The condenser coils are next. If there is any blockage on the coils, this certainly will prevent the air from being drawn in. You can take a hose or wire brush to fix this issue. Check out this easy to follow video for step by step instructions https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qvbA5JUOzLQ&t=160s

These are just a few basic tips to help you should you run into problems. Calling a professional may be your better and quicker option to get you cool and calm again!

Tips to Keeping Your AC Expenses Low

Tips to Keeping Your AC Expenses Low

There is nothing better than walking into your nice cold air-conditioned home on a scorching hot day! The hotter it gets, the lower we set our AC, and the higher the hydro bill goes. With hydro rates increasing, who needs to add to their expenses? So, here are a few tips and tricks you can use to help keep your money in your wallet instead of in the pockets of the hydro companies.

  1. If you have central air, make sure all the vents in your home are open. We often think by closing a vent to push the air into other areas of the home it will help, but that’s a myth. By closing too many vents you can actually decrease the air flow to a point where the air conditioner will freeze up.  The air conditioner will continue to operate and not be able to remove any heat, or moisture causing the air conditioner to run continuously and cost you more money.

  2. Keep your filters clean. Commonly we are told to replace the filter in our furnace twice a year, but by making it a monthly task you are ensuring airflow is not being blocked by dirt, dust or debris that gets trapped in the filters.

  3. Use fans to move the air. It is common knowledge that heat rises and cool air falls, so during the summer, you will find that your upstairs seems warmer than the downstairs. Using a portable fan (which uses less energy that an air conditioner) to force the cool air up with help circulate the air to where you need it to go.

  4. Decrease the use of major appliances. Of course, you need to do laundry and make dinner, but if you make it a point to do laundry during the evening and if make your loads smaller you will notice a difference. Lighter loads mean less work for your dryer therefore less heat is produced. When it comes to making dinner, think outside the box. Instead of turning on your oven which gives off a lot of heat, use the Barbeque or slow cooker. Many of us find it’s often too hot to eat big meals in the summer, so salads are another great option.

  5. BTU’s matter. If you are using portable air conditioning units, be sure you have the right size of machine for the amount of space that you’re cooling. If you are trying to use a small unit for a large space, the air conditioner will constantly be working at full force to cool the air but on the other hand if the air conditioning unit is too large, it will cycle on and off too frequently.  This will not allow the air conditioning unit to remove the moisture, and cause premature failure of the air conditioner.

  6. Program your thermostat. Having a thermostat that you can program to change the temperature for times you aren’t home or during the night when it tends to be cooler is definitely a good investment.

If you use these few tips and tricks you will be sure to see a decrease in the energy you use and the amount of your bills. Stay cool this summer without breaking the bank!
