The Karma Project (www.thekarmaprojectinc.com)  is a non-profit food co-operative aiming to foster a sustainable and accessible local food system for the community of Huronia. Karma's Mission is to foster and promote an inclusive, diverse, sustainable, and community-owned local food system through education, co-operation, leadership, and creativity.

Karma believes that all citizens should have fair access to healthy, local, culturally appropriate food. We envision Huronia’s many diverse cultures working together with local governments and organizations to bridge the good food gap, ensuring that an inclusive, dynamic, and viable food system can grow amongst our communities. We believe that this broad change can be achieved through positive and open popular education and through the cultivation of co-operative and supportive gardens, farmers’ markets, cultural events, and school programming, as a means to achieving our goals.

The Karma Team has set big goals for the project to accomplish in the coming years. We plan on working with the five different communities in Huronia to further increase household access to affordable, nutritious, sustainable food.

The following is a list of our current projects:

*The Karma Marketplace (since November 2007) - It is here where we offer a wide range of local, organic, and Fair Trade food, and artisan crafts for sale. We run a weekly food box program to facilitate your local food shopping process (e-mail thekarmaprojectinc@gmail.com  to be added to our mailing list), and also a winter CSA food box that runs for 17 weeks. We are always looking for new artisans, artists, and food suppliers, if you have a product you would like us to see, e-mail our team or stop by the shop!

*The Penetanguishene Community Market (since June 2009) - The farmer's market in Penetanguishene. Contact us for more information or if you'd like to become a vendor.

* The Midland Waterfront Market (since 2014)- The Farmers' market in Midland. Contact us for more information

*The Edible Classroom - This is an education program working to increase awareness and knowledge of how to grow, harvest, preserve, and prepare food. The program is inclusive of all workshops, education outreach, and school programs (since 2010)

*The Ecology Garden (since late winter 2010) - This local community garden in Penetanguishene, located at Fox St and Beck Blvd, is run by a partnership between the Town and Karma. We work together to host 30 community plots, where community members can rent space for the season (plots are available for $20, which includes your plot, heirloom seeds, and discounts on local gardening workshops). The Garden also has 20 beds dedicated to social enterprise and donation to organizations in need of fresh produce.

* The Port McNicoll garden- currently in progress

*The Karma Kitchen (since May 2012) - Our kitchen provides food for the Pay-What-You-Wish Cafe, caters for special food-focused events, and collaborates with other organizations to increase good food access for all community members.

*The Harbour Market (since June 2012) - The farmer's market in Victoria Harbour.

*The Hundred Mile Market on Christian Island (since July 2012) - The farmer's market on Christian Island.

*The Pay-What-You-Wish Cafe (Since November 2012) - This model allows people from all walks of life the opportunity to access quality food, company, and conversation. The café embodies the same criteria of Karma, serving ONLY Fair Trade, organic and local food. The café follows a self-serve model to minimize staffing costs, reduce waste, and allow patrons to cater to their needs. There is also a time exchange option which allows patrons to volunteer in return for café food.

*The Good Food Box (since October 2013) - This is a province wide non-profit initiative and The Karma Project has adopted the North Simcoe portion of the project. Food boxes are $10 or $15 and include mostly Ontario grown produce. Orders are made through Karma before the 7th of each month and are available on the 3rd Wednesday of each month. Each food box is filled with food identical to that in the grocery store, but arrives directly from the Toronto Food Terminal and is packed by a group of dedicated volunteers - significantly reducing the cost of the fresh fruits and vegetables.

Please e-mail us (thekarmaprojectinc@gmail.com) if you have any questions/comments on any of these projects. Come in to our shop at 423 Talbot st, Port McNicoll and ask any of our staff about our marketplace, cafe, farmers' markets, education programs, and our overall desire to increase food access in the community.
