President's Message

I would like to wish everyone a very Merry Christmas and the best of the best for the New Year! I know with all our amazing members it will be a year of growth in business and frienships. This time of year always makes me stop and look at all the things I am grateful for and the things I can do better! I am always so grateful for my family and friends, for without these amazing people in my life, what do I really have? Being apart of the MDBWA has given me the opportunity to meet new friends and enjoy a night of fun and laughter!

Please read this newsletter in full, it has some very interesting facts and information about our community. There will be a January newsletter that will have information of our upcoming dinner details and so much more! I look forward to seeing everyone again in the new year.

Please Help Open The Doors!

$2 from every purchase of a Care Bear set including an A & W mug, an ornament, suckers and candy cane will be donated to our cancer centre.

Thank you for helping to open the doors of the THE GEORGIAN BAY CANCER SUPPORT CENTRE!!

The Georgian Bay Cancer Support Centre exists to create a “home away from home” atmosphere dedicated to improving the quality of life for people whose lives are affected by cancer.

Our mission is to support the psychological, physical, and spiritual needs of cancer patients, their caregivers and family members as they learn to live with cancer in their lives.

Did you know..............????
  • Each year over 200 new cases of cancer are diagnosed in our local community (Midland, Penetanguishene, Tiny and Tay Townships).
  • Patients and their caregivers have to travel outside our community to treatment centres in Barrie, Toronto, London, Sudbury, and Thunder Bay.
  • These cancer patients need access to support in their local communities, to allow them to work and function close to home as they learn to live with cancer in their lives.

A portion of the proceeds from the purchase of A&W gift packages will assist us to:
  • Renovate our space to create a welcoming “home away from home” atmosphere.
  • Launch Support Group programs for cancer patients, caregivers and family

The mugs will continue to be for sale after Christmas with a teeny A & W teddy instead of the ornament.

We are a community based, not-for profit organization providing support services as a complement to medical treatment for people diagnosed with cancer, their caregivers and family.

How to reach us:

We are located at the Georgian Bay General Hospital, Penetanguishene site; 15 Jeffrey Street

Phone number (beginning January 10th 2011) : (705) 549-6444

Out Of The Cold ~ We raised $350! Way to go ladies!

I met with Bob Bruer, Coordinator of the Out of the Cold Program, to give him the monies raised from the MDBWA Christmas Dinner.

Bob was very happy to accept our greatly needed funds! I talked with Bob and he showed me the facility. I asked if there was anything else they could use, he said they could always use some very inexpensive bath towels, perked coffee is always needed, and the guests that go there enjoy playing scrabble! They are in need of a few scrabble dictionaries and a scrabble deluxe edition board which holds the letters in place (sells for approx $40).

So if you are out and about and can offer a helping hand with any of the above items or even your time, it would be greatly appreciated. For more info contact Bob Bruer at 427-3340 or email at bob.bruer+ootc@gmail.com

Some background information on our Out of the Cold Program:

After a few months of planning, the Midland Out of the Cold shelter first opened its doors in January 2004. The first season was essentially a trial run, opening only three evenings of the week from January to the end of March. By December and the start of the second season, need had given rise to the program running every day of the week. Over the next three seasons, the program moved daily from church to church in Midland (and for one day of the week, Penetanguishene). Volunteers in the early years recall the frustrations of having to transport large bins of supplies and bedding from one building to another. Guests, too, were sometimes found wandering the streets, unable to remember which church was hosting Out of the Cold on which day.

In response to such challenges, Out of the Cold leaders secured in 2007 sufficient funds to create a permanent shelter in the basement of Knox Presbyterian Church in Midland. Functional but not luxurious, the new space has a washer and dryer, a shower and dedicated kitchen facilities for volunteers to use in the preparation of meals.

Over the three seasons since moving into Knox, volunteers have served more than 5,000 suppers (a daily average of 14) and provided more than 2,100 overnight stays for guests (a daily average of 6).

More than 200 volunteers are involved during each Out Of the Cold season. As season eight approaches, the program plans to open two weeks earlier and close two weeks later (Nov. 15, 2010 to April 17, 2011). To support this expansion, volunteer recruitment is targeting teens as young as 14 years of age to augment the Out Of the Cold team.
